Abstract: A utility vehicle is provided with a middle axle that is mounted at the end of a bogey beam for both flotational and oscillatory movement relative to the frame of the vehicle. The middle axle is restrained longitudinally by support links that are pivotally connected to the frame at a location that is forward of the rear drive axle. The middle axle is formed by a pair of stub axles interconnected by a support beam that is pivotally connected to the rearward end of the bogey beam. Vertical movement of the middle axle support wheels results in a corresponding vertical movement of the rearward end of the bogey beam and a rotation of the support beam about its pivotal connection on the bogey beam. The oscillatory movement is accomplished by a pivotal connection via a ball joint between a central support bracket mounting the transverse support beam to the longitudinally extending bogey beam.

Abstract: An attachment portion between an upper member (11) and a radiator (20) is constructed so as to be displaced in a longitudinal direction of the upper member (11) when an impact force is applied to the upper member (11) by constructing a mount cushion (30) so as to be deformed easily in a longer diameter direction thereof. By this structure, when an impact force is applied to the upper member (11) from a front side of a vehicle, as it is not that the radiator (20) and the upper member (11) are deformed together but that the upper member (11) is deformed prior to the radiator (20), a bending rigidity to an impact force becomes smaller than a conventional case. Consequently, since the upper member is allowed to be deformed easily at the time of collision without largely reducing the mechanical strength of the upper member (11), compatibility between the requirements of protection of pedestrians and sufficient strength of the upper member (11) can be ensured.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling frame rise on a heavy duty truck having a frame, a drive axle connected to the frame, and a selectively lockable suspension component disposed therebetween for maintaining the relative position therebetween. Signals indicative of at least one of the following vehicle operating parameters: engine speed, brake pressure, vehicle speed, air bag pressure, steering wheel angle, vehicle height, or throttle position are monitored and a predicted thrust is calculated that will be applied to the drive axle based on the monitored signals. The selectively lockable suspension component is locked if the predicted thrust exceeds a predetermined threshold and is also controlled with respect to other operating parameters such as whether vehicle brakes are applied, any instantaneous change in torque, vehicle operating speed, and the length of time the selectively lockable suspension component has been locked.

Abstract: A method for controlling vibration energy in a structure having a vibrating member using a vibration confinement device is provided. The vibrating member has boundaries and vibrates relative to the boundaries. The method includes selecting a vibration confinement region in the vibrating member relative to the boundaries. Determining an effective torsional stiffness and an effective translational stiffness for the vibration confinement device is included in the method. The method includes determining an operating position relative to the boundaries for the vibration confinement device on the vibrating member to define a determined position. The method includes positioning the vibration confinement device at the determined position to substantially confine the vibration energy to the vibration confinement region.

Abstract: A towing member for a piece of towable baggage is provide with towing handle that is pivotal relative to an arm portion of the towing member. The pivotal relation of the towing handle and the arm potion enables the towing handle to be rotated into a position where a person can grasp the towing handle in a comfortable position by his or her side when the piece of baggage is being towed. The pivotal relation of the towing handle and the arm potion also improves the maneuverability of a towable piece of baggage by reducing the need for a person to twist his or her wrist when steering the piece of baggage. The invention also allows the towing handle of retractable towing members to be pivoted into an appropriate position relative to the piece of baggage such that the towing handle lies flush with the baggage and will not become snagged on other items.

The tooth part has a first engagement face (121) formed with a plurality of teeth (114) and the piece part has a second engagement face (110) formed with a plurality of pieces (102). The first engagement face and the second engagement face are disposed facing each other generally perpendicularly to the axial direction. A disc spring (124) is disposed on the rear face of the piece part. As the piece part rotates in the direction of running forward, the piece is engaged with a sharply sloping face of the tooth to engage with the tooth and the angle of the piece with respect to the second engagement face increases, whereby the piece slides so as to increase the distance from the tooth part in resistance to the disc spring.

Abstract: An electronically-controlled viscous fan drive having a one-piece accumulator and reservoir located on the top side of the clutch. The accumulator also has a low pressure and high pressure fill hole for allowing movement of viscous fluid from the reservoir to a anti-bleedback chamber and into the operating and working chamber of the coupling during normal operation. A radially balance valve disk having a step up feature coupled to a spring and an actuator electronically controls movement of viscous fluid from the reservoir to the anti-bleedback chamber through the fill holes by energizing or deenergizing the spring based on engine operating conditions. The valve disk may be a one-piece or two-piece design. The accumulator is designed to prevent morning sickness associated with the flow of viscous fluid from the reservoir to the operating chamber during engine off situations.
