Abstract: Process for the processing of image data which represent the color values of an image, to achieve optimal color reproduction of the image by an image reproduction system, especially by a photographic printer or photolab in response to the image data. In an exemplary embodiment, the image data which represent first positions in a first color space are received. The first positions are transformed into transformation positions which represent positions in a second color space; and the response of the image reproduction system to the image data is modeled with a model image reproduction system such that the model image reproduction system outputs the response as model positions which represent the color values produced by the model image reproductions system in response to the input of the image data as positions in a second color space.

Abstract: The objective of the present invention is to provide a simple and accurate process for extracting an object from an image, which is used to impose a great load for an operator. According to the present invention, an image processing apparatus comprises an object extracting unit, for performing a predetermined process for image data for a position or an area that is designated and for extracting a specific object from an image, an outline part deciding unit, for selecting and authenticating an arbitrary segment of an outline obtained by the extracting unit, and an outline synthesis unit, for linking and synthesizing together the outline segments that are authenticated. Since a closed curve is formed by synthesizing the outline segments obtained by repeating the above process, and the outline of the object is thus determined, the outline segment that is extracted from the image and matches the correct outline of the object is sequentially selected and authenticated.

Abstract: A rounding accuracy of DCT coefficients that are quantized is dynamically varied with a simple structure. As a result, an encoding noise is effectively suppressed and the picture quality is prevented from being deteriorated. DCT coefficients of which a picture signal is transformed by DCT are input to a quantizing circuit 30. The quantizing circuit 30 quantizes the DCT coefficients with a quantizer matrix and supplies the quantized DCT coefficients to a multiplying device 33 through an absolute value circuit 31. A quantizer scale value based on the generated code amount of the entire screen is converted into an invert value thereof and then supplied to a multiplying device 33. In addition, an M value designating circuit 38 designates a value M as a parameter with which a rounding accuracy of DCT coefficients that are quantized is controlled according to a quantizer scale value. An adding device 34 adds the value M to an output of the multiplying device 33.

Abstract: To acquire a high-resolution frame from a plurality of frames sampled from a video image, it is necessary to obtain a high-resolution frame with reduced picture quality degradation regardless of motion of a subject included in the frame. Because of this, between a plurality of contiguous frames FrN and FrN+1, there is estimated a correspondent relationship. Based on the correspondent relationship, the frames FrN+1 and FrN are interposed to obtain first and second interpolated frames FrH1 and FrH2. Based on the correspondent relationship, the coordinates of the frame FrN+1 are transformed, and from a correlation value with the frame FrN, there is obtained a weighting coefficient &agr;(x°, y°) that makes the weight of the first interpolated frame FrH1 greater as a correlation becomes greater. With the weighting coefficient, the first and second interpolated frames are weighted and added to acquire a synthesized frame FrG.

During the last n-1 decomposition levels each decomposition level transform block is controlled by a control signal corresponding to the sum of two temporal mean differences outputted from the previous decomposition level. The corresponding temporal means of said previous decomposition level are the input signals for said transform block. When the said control signal is equal to zero the output values of said transform block is the temporal mean value and the temporal mean difference of the input signals. When the bits within each pixel of the combined image are reversed, i.e. the least significant bit (LSB) is exchanged with the most significant bit (MSB), and the resultant image is viewed, then the transformed first digital image is seen. In this way, the transformed first digital image can be hidden inside the noise bits of the first digital image. The method is applied to color pixels by treating each color byte independently. Abstract: A wheel bearing includes a sealing device 5 positioned between inner and outer members 1 and 2. This sealing device 5 includes an elastic member 14, which eventually forms an encoder grid and is provided on a first annular sealing plate 11. A second annular sealing plate 12 is provided with sealing lips 16a to 16c. An engagement 18 between a cylindrical wall 11a of the first annular sealing plate 11 and the inner member 1 is provided with an elastic member 20 made of a material dissimilar to that for the elastic material 14. This elastic member 20 may be a rubber coated layer, resin paint layer, a thin film of adhesive material or a ring-shaped rubber member. Thereby, any possible ingress of water across an engagement surface of the annular sealing plate is prevented, accompanied by increase of the lifetime of the bearing, with no problem associated with separation and displacement of the annular sealing plates. The magnetic flux density can also be easily secured.

Abstract: An optical fiber-based device exhibiting tunable birefringence utilizes a section of fiber including an optically nonlinear core region (i.e., doped with a material such as vanadium or erbium), where the fiber is configured to exhibit circular asymmetry and thus introduce birefringence into the fiber. The circular asymmetry may be accomplished by depositing the nonlinear core material in an asymmetric pattern or by launching the pump signal into an asymmetric mode of the fiber waveguide (i.e., an LP[1,m] mode). Polarization control can be generated by such a device through controlling the intensity of an input optical pump signal, since the pump signal intensity has been found to control the birefringence of a circularly asymmetric fiber waveguide.

Abstract: A low-cost circulator used in fiber optic networks to accomplish bi-directional communication along a single fiber optic cable. The circulator has three ports, namely an input port, an output port and a bi-directional network port. The circulator core is constructed such that when light with a specific polarization is input into the input port, it is bent into the bi-directional network port where it can be propagated to the fiber optic network. Light input from the bi-directional network port can be any state of polarization, and it passes through the circulator core to the output port.

Abstract: A terminal (104) is connected to a communication link (102) comprising a ribbon fiber (110) for communication in two directions over pairs of fiber in the ribbon. For each incoming fiber (106) in the ribbon fiber a receiver (112) is connected to an amplifier/detector (114) which emits detection signals on line (117). The detection signals indicate that there is sufficient optical power in the corresponding incoming fibers and are supplied via gates (124) to control units (122). These control whether electric signals incoming on lines (120) are to be conveyed further to transmitters (118) for being sent on the outgoing fibers (108). A channel selector unit (126) delivers selector signals to the gates so that when insufficient optical power exists in an incoming fiber the corresponding transmitter is only permitted to transmit during short repeated periods and is shut off in between.

Abstract: The present invention generally relates to optical communication systems, and more particularly, to an apparatus combining microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) elements and optical wavelength division multiplexing/demultiplexing (WDM) elements for optical wavelength selective add/drop application. Wherein, optical fiber arrays or optical planar waveguide arrays are used as the input terminal and the output terminal of multiple optical signals. Moreover, 1×N one-dimensional micro-mirror arrays manufactured by using the MEMS technology are applied to change the transmitting directions of the optical signal of each channel between the input terminals and the output terminals, thus, it achieves the purpose of switching the optical signals from one channel of input terminals to another corresponding channel of output terminals.

The reflector in the first position is disposed such that it reflects the optical signal into the second output channel. The optical signal from first input channel is coupled into second output fiber. The optical signal from second input fiber is coupled into first output fiber. The reflector in the second position is disposed such that the input optical signal propagates to a second reflector and is reflected and refocused into the output fiber. The reflection direction from the second reflector introduces a double reflection by utilizing two planar reflectors. The optical signal from first input channel is reflected into first output channel. The optical signal from second input channel will be coupled into second output channel.

Abstract: A first embodiment of the present invention provides a dense wavelength division multiplexer which has a planar array of input optical channels, each channel capable of receiving an optical signal. Coupled to this planar array of input channels is a first waveguide concentrator which facilitates the reduction of the spacing between the cores of the input optical channels. A first collimating provides means for transforming the optical signals into a collimated beam. A wavelength dependent element is disposed proximate the first collimating means. A second collimating means refocuses the collimated beam into an optical channel in a second waveguide concentrator, which facilitates the expansion of the spacing between the cores of the output channels, and ultimately to an array of output optical channels.

This invention also compensates for some of the rapid rise and fall time of the present system. A single pick-up, either a fiber or a photodiode, is placed at the end of a waveguide. A lens or lens system is used to focus a single optical signal on to the fiber face or the photodiode active area. Various light injection techniques, such as fibers, fiber/lens assemblies, lensed VCEL, lasers, or LEDs can be utilized because of the location in the system.
