Abstract: The shafts of upstream and downstream turbines are interconnected by a coupling. A diffuser is provided in an intermediate cavity between the upstream and downstream turbines to recover kinetic energy, as well as minimize or eliminate windage and spinning losses resultant from exposure of the coupling to the flowpath along the turbines. A radial entry inlet provides a supplemental fluid admission into the intermediate cavity, the admission being turned axially and circumferentially for joining with the flow exiting the upstream turbine for combined flow to the downstream turbine.

Abstract: In the diaphragm packing area of a turbine, a raised platform affords an annular sealing surface for contact with a brush seal carried by the diaphragm. The platform includes a plurality of platform sealing segments secured to a locking device carried by the rotor. The locking device includes a pair of raised rims having flanges with teeth projecting axially toward one another and defining slots therebetween. The platform segments each include underlying flanges with axially oppositely directed teeth. By displacing the platform sealing segments radially inwardly and passing the teeth of the locking device and platform segments through the respective slots, the platform segment teeth lie radially inwardly of the locking device teeth. The platform segments are then rotated radially to align the teeth to secure the sealing surface against radial movement. One segment may be staked, welded or screwed to the locking device to preclude circumferential movement during turbine operation.

  • Publication number: 20040086379
Abstract: The root region of a flowpath through a turbine includes a sealing configuration for minimizing leakage flow and secondary aerodynamic losses. Entrance and exit root radial seals are provided between upstream and downstream nozzles at locations radially inwardly of the root region of the flowpath to minimize radial leakage flow. To minimize intrusion flow into the flowpath from rotor pumping action and consequent aerodynamic losses, an exit flow guide on each bucket turns the exiting radial flow in a predominantly axial direction. Additionally, the upstream bucket root radius and nozzle root radius are faired or tapered to minimize the possibility of a protuberance projecting into the flowpath at steady state operation. An additional entrance root axial fin is provided on the buckets to reduce the flow coefficient and afford further reduction in leakage flow.

Abstract: A system for maintaining constant pressure, such as at a mosquito fogging nozzle, by electronically controlling the speed of an engine that is coupled to a blower. A pressure sensor measures the pressure provided by the blower and provides a pressure signal to the electronic engine controller. The engine controller is of the proportional-integral (PI) type and utilizes pulse-width modulation (PWM) techniques to control an electromechanical actuator attached to the throttle of the engine to vary the engine speed. Constant pressure is maintained despite changes in the ambient temperature, humidity and barometric pressure. A safety circuit prevents engine over-speed if the pressure signal is lost. An over-speed circuit monitors and controls the engine speed at higher RPMs.

Opposing mesh layers are placed into relative motion by a variety of motive forces. Fluid between the opposing mesh layers is compressed so as to be pumped through the mesh layers when the relative motion of the layers is toward each other. Mesh layers may also be offset from each other though an actuating force so that one mesh layer blocks the openings in the other mesh layer, thereby creating an impediment to fluid flow. The degree of offset may be varied so as to create a partial impediment to fluid flow, thereby presenting a filter effect.

Abstract: The object of the present invention is to provide a control valve for a variable displacement compressor, which is capable of controlling the variable displacement compressor to the minimum capacity without using an electromagnetic clutch, and can be constructed without accommodating a solenoid in a pressure chamber. A plunger of a solenoid is formed by a first plunger and a second plunger, and a diaphragm is disposed between them, for sensing suction pressure Ps, such that the first plunger controls a valve element via a shaft, with component elements of the solenoid except for the first plunger being disposed on a side of the diaphragm where the atmospheric pressure is received. Further, when the solenoid is not energized, the high suction pressure Ps urges the second plunger toward the core via the diaphragm, and a spring causes the first plunger to urge the valve element to the fully open position, which enables the variable displacement compressor to be controlled to the minimum capacity.

Abstract: The present invention provides an improved refrigerant compressor comprising an overall casing, an electric motor with a stator and a rotor which is mounted on a drive shaft, and a screw compressor. A compressor screw of the screw compressor is mounted on the drive shaft, which is rotatably mounted in the casing by a first radial bearing between the rotor and the compressor screw and a second radial bearing disposed on a side of the compressor screw lying opposite the first radial bearing. The drive shaft is mounted in the casing by a third radial bearing disposed on a side of the rotor lying opposite the first radial bearing. A portion of the drive shaft which extends between the first radial bearing and one of the second and third radial bearings being adapted to compensate for alignment errors between the three radial bearings.

Abstract: The present invention provides a PFA resin helical blade for use in a compressor, which is superior in dimensional precision and surface smoothness with a superior anti-fatigue property, and a manufacturing method thereof. In a manufacturing method of a compressor-use helical blade of the present invention, a PFA composite resin, which is formed by mixing an inorganic filler with a tetrafluoroethylene/perfluoroalkylvinyl ether copolymer (PFA resin) having a —CH2OH terminal group, which has not been subjected to a stabilizing process, and has fluidity of not ness than 15 g/10 min, is used, and after the resin has been molded into a helical blade through an injection-molding process, the resulting matter is subjected to a heating process at a temperature from 280 to 300° C. for a period from not less than 10 hours to not more than 300 hours.

Abstract: The invention shows how powder injection molding may be used to form a continuous body having multiple parts, each of which has different functional properties such as corrosion resistance or hardness, there being no connective materials such as solder or glue between the parts. This is accomplished through careful control of the relative shrinkage rates of these various parts. Although there is no limit to how many parts with different functional properties can make up an object, special attention is paid to certain pairs of functional properties that are difficult and/or expensive to combine in a single object when other manufacturing means are used.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for the cross-hole pressing of cutting inserts is disclosed whereby a green part is fabricated using metallurgical powder and an opening is imparted within the green part by placing the metallurgical powder about an oval-shaped core rod. Using a press with a uni-axial press motion, a core rod is placed within the cavity of a mold and metallurgical powder placed around the core rod and thereafter compressed to form a green part. The subject invention is also directed to an article formed utilizing such a process and the uni-axial press used to produce such an insert.
