Over a test block period of time, the method periodically obtains upstream data points from an oxygen sensor located upstream of the catalyst and from and oxygen sensor located downstream of the catalyst. Absolute differences are calculated between consecutive pairs of the upstream data points and the downstream data points. A ratio between the sums of absolute differences is then calculated, and the ratio is used to determine whether the catalyst has aged.

Abstract: An exhaust gas purification system of an internal combustion engine supplies hydrocarbon by performing a post injection and the like in order to combust particulate matters accumulated in a diesel particulate filter (a DPF) having an oxidation catalyst. An electronic control unit (an ECU) senses temperature of exhaust gas upstream of the DPF with an exhaust gas temperature sensor and determines an upper limit value of permissible quantity of the hydrocarbon supplied to the DPF based on the sensed temperature. The ECU controls post injection quantity so that the quantity of the actually supplied hydrocarbon does not exceed the upper limit value. Thus, hydrocarbon poisoning can be precluded, since the quantity of the actually supplied hydrocarbon does not exceed the upper limit value.

Abstract: A method of producing with the collapsing process an optical fiber preform capable of forming an optical fiber in which an increment in transmission loss due to OH absorption is reduced, and an optical fiber preform and an optical fiber produced with the method. The method comprises reducing the amount of hydrogen atom-containing substances in a glass pipe, sealing one end of the glass pipe, and collapsing the glass pipe to obtain a solid body. One aspect of the method comprises heating the glass pipe at 550° C. or below, sealing one end of the glass pipe, and collapsing the glass pipe to obtain a solid body. The preform produced with the method has a feature in that its portion formed by the interface portion at the time of the collapsing contains OH groups at a concentration of 100 wt. ppb or below. The optical fiber produced by drawing the preform has a feature in that its OH-originated loss is less than 0.5 dB/km at a wavelength of 1.38 &mgr;m.

Abstract: Systems and methods for treating spools of fiber using recycled gas. Spools of fiber are placed in chambers which can be sealed for exposure to the treatment gas. When a chamber is closed and sealed the treatment gas is pumped into the chamber to a specified pressure temperature and pressure to react with the fiber. Upon completion of the reaction the gas is pumped from the chamber in order to facilitate the removal of the treated fiber. The gas can be evacuated with a vacuum pump and compressed to be stored in a pressure vessel for reuse. At this time the gas may be analyzed. If the concentration of a component is too low, the gas may be vented or it may be enriched so that it may be recycled; otherwise it is compressed for storage and the process is repeated.

Abstract: In the context of a single-phase universal motor, which has proven its worth in particular as an agile washing machine drive, the novel control provides for a substantial reduction in the remagnetization losses, rotary speed dependency, level of efficiency, and the fluctuations in the motor current pulsating at double the mains frequency, together with the resulting losses and production of noise in particular because of torque fluctuations and electromagnetically excited oscillations of the stator iron core. The motor is no longer operated by way of the phase-angle control, which is synchronized with the mains frequency, of a pulse-fired triac which is self-turning off with the current zero crossing and also no longer operated by way of the pulse duty factor of a chopper oscillating freely at high frequency.

Abstract: A method utilizes a locking device that includes a shackle member having a shank with a latch portion and a stop at opposite ends. A locking head mounts in a locked state on the latch portion but is removable when unlocked. A sleeve is carried on the shank but is removable. The sleeve and the shank together define a size conversion structure for the shackle. When the sleeve is on the shank, the shackle has one operative thickness to closely fit one size aperture, but when the sleeve is removed, the shackle has another, smaller operative thickness to fit a smaller aperture. A retaining member may be employed to resist removal of the sleeve. Two or more sleeves may be used to fit more than two apertures.

Abstract: A process of roll forming a tubular metallic body for a fluid connector comprised of first affixing a tubular metallic body of substantially constant diameter in a roll forming machine, then positioning a series of freely rotatable independent tools in a circumferential pattern surrounding the tubular body. The tools are then rotated within a predetermined velocity range and minimal radial contact is applied between the series of tools and the tubular body. This contact forms at least one radial groove in the tubular body, smoothes the outer surface of the tubular body and decreases the outside diameter of a portion of the tubular body for a predetermined distance along its periphery at a constant, uniform rate. Also the proximate end of the decreasing diameter portion is rounded. Further, the metallic tubular body is fabricated from a 5000 series aluminum alloy.
