  • Patent number: 6832088
Abstract: The present invention relates to enabling and optimizing call setup in a telecommunication network with separated call control and bearer control, i.e., payload transmission. The separation of call control and payload transmission means that the signaling between control nodes like MSCs, GMSCs and TSCs takes a different route through the network than the payload. This enables the telecommunication network to perform an optimal routing for the payload, using a minimum of resources. Depending on the call case, originating call, terminating call, internal call or transit call, there are only one or maximally two MGW necessary.

  • Patent number: 6832090
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed by which a base transceiver station (BTS) may be uniquely identified. When attempting to determine the location of a mobile unit using signal from multiple BTSs, it is critical that the BTSs be uniquely identified and their position accurately determined. In many cases, the signals received from the BTSs provide limited identification information and cannot be used to uniquely to identify the BTS from which a signal has been received. The present invention uses available information to generate a candidate list and to determine therefrom the most likely candidates for the Measurement BTSs. Based on this information, the system analyzes cell coverage overlap and relative phase delay to determine the likelihood of a candidate BTS being the actual BTS from which a signal is received. As candidate BTSs are uniquely identified, it is possible to use this additional identification information in an iterative process to further identify additional candidate BTSs.

  • Patent number: 6832094
Abstract: A novel and improved method and system for paging a cellular telephone or other wireless terminal using two paging channels that reduces standby mode power consumption described. In one embodiment of the invention, a minimally encoded quick paging channel is established over which short, quick page messages are transmitted during one of a set of quick paging slots. The quick page message indicates that a communications request has been received, and that the receiving communication terminals should process a highly encoded full paging channel over which more detailed, full page messages are transmitted during the next full paging slot. A terminal monitors full paging channel only after a quick page message has been received on the quick paging channel.

  • Patent number: 6832095
Abstract: A system and a method of controlling transmitter power in a wireless communication system in which user data is processed as a multirate signal having a rate N(t) and in which the user data signal having rate N(t) is converted into a transmission data signal having a faster rate M(t) for transmission. The transmission power is adjusted on a relatively slow basis based on quality of data received by a receiver of the transmitted data. The transmitter power is determined as a function of N(t)/M(t) such that a change in the data rate in the multiple channels or the rate of the transmission data signal is compensated in advance of a quality of data based adjustment associated with such data rate change. Preferably, the user data signal having rate N(t) is converted into the transmission data signal having the faster rate M(t) by repeating selected data bits whereby the energy per bit to noise spectrum density ratio is increased in the transmission data signal.

  • Patent number: 6832124
Abstract: The invention relates to an arrangement for and a method of shaping an end face 230 of an optical fiber 26. The end face 230 is heated by a heat source 204, 206 in order to form a substantially hemispherical end face 230, which functions as a lens and has a predetermined radius value. An actual radius value of the end face is repetitively calculated by a control computer 6 using information from an image processing device 4, which computer 6 then compares the actual radius value with the predetermined radius value. The heating of the end face is continued if the actual radius value is lower than the predetermined radius value, and discontinued if the actual radius value is equal to or higher than the predetermined radius value.

Abstract: A method for reproducibly making photographs of different fabrics is provided. The method produces photographs which depict one or more characteristics of each fabric. Such characteristics include the texture, pattern, thickness, drape and translucency, each of which characteristics can be reliably understood and compared. The method comprises the steps of folding each fabric in the same way, placing the folded fabric on a background surface in order to provide the fabric with a standardized draped shape and then photographing each draped and folded fabric in the same way. Further, by utilizing digital photography the photographs for each fabric can be suitably viewed via an internet web site. Additionally, the photograph of each fabric can also be computer generated in a photo-realistic image depicting a likely or intended use of the fabric, for example, as drapery or a covering for furniture.

  • Patent number: 6832128
Abstract: The invention is directed to rendering a three-dimensional view of a workpiece shape based on a point set using a normal vector representation. The distribution of the normal vectors can be analyzed by a centered view of the normal vectors, which can be done manually and/or automatically. These structures give a first indication of the surface quality. In addition to the centered representation, the normal vectors can also be directly overlaid on the path, which facilitates the determination of local flaws. In addition, a pseudo-surface view can be generated based on the position of the normal vectors.

  • Patent number: 6832131
Abstract: A legged mobile robot possesses degrees of freedom which are provided at roll, pitch, and yaw axes at a trunk. By using these degrees of freedom which are provided at the trunk, the robot can smoothly get up from any fallen-down posture. In addition, by reducing the required torque and load on movable portions other than the trunk, and by spreading/averaging out the load between each of the movable portions, concentration of a load on a particular member is prevented from occurring. As a result, the robot is operated more reliably, and energy is used with greater efficiency during a getting-up operation. The robot independently, reliably, and smoothly gets up from various fallen-down postures such as a lying-on-the-face posture, a lying-on-the-back posture, and a lying sideways posture.

  • Patent number: 6832132
Abstract: A legged mobile robot is adaptively controlled in its attitude against variable external forces to continue the operation without inversion. When the legged mobile robot kicks an object having a certain mass, such as a ball, the robot is to be prevented from being fallen down by the reactive force from the object. Even if the mass or the repulsion coefficient of the object kicked is unknown, the operation of kicking the object at a sufficiently low speed is carried out at the outset to predict the reactive force produced on actual kicking in order to predict the reactive force produced on actual kicking. The result is that the stability in attitude can be maintained on kicking at an arbitrary speed. The legged mobile robot is able to take part as one of the players in athletic games, such as soccer games, in which each player performs his or her role as the or she is subjected to an external force.
