Abstract: A forearm guard is disclosed wherein the components thereof provides both effective impact protection to the forearm and perspiration absorbing capability to prevent moisture from effecting the user's grip. In the preferred embodiments of the invention, the forearm guard comprises a sleeve of stretchable material and a flexible impact absorbing pad affixed to the forearm portion of said sleeve. The sleeve is preferably comprised of washable fabric that includes an elastomeric component, and/or is woven to provide stretchability. The sleeve can be of any suitable length and diameter effective to secure the impact absorbing pad over the forearm and thereby protect the forearm of the wearer during an athletic activity. In the preferred embodiments of this invention, the forearm guard is particularly suitable in the protection of the forearm of a baseball player from a wild pitch during batting.

Abstract: A swimming pool cover which retards algae growth. Two films are sealed together so as to create air pockets which allow the pool cover to float on the surface of the water. One or both of the films contains a material which prevents the passage of light in those wavelengths which are necessary for algae growth, especially 350-500 nm and 600-700 nm. The material may either be a dye which has a color associated with that wavelength or may be a transparent material which removes those wavelengths of light. The remaining wavelengths of light are allowed to pass through the cover in order to heat the water but not cause algae growth. Additionally, the cover can be made by mixing light absorbing material into the plastic before making the film for the pool cover or may be made by applying a layer of light absorbing material to the film.

Abstract: The substrate for artificial leathers of the invention comprises an entangled nonwoven fabric which is mainly made of bundles of polyamide microfine fibers and an elastic polymer which is impregnated into intervening spaces in the entangled nonwoven fabric. The single fiber fineness of polyamide microfine fibers is 0.2 dtex or less. The bundles of polyamide microfine fibers have an average tenacity of 3.5 cN/dtex or more and an average elongation of 60% or less. Despite its extremely low apparent specific gravity of 0.30 or less, the substrate for artificial leathers exhibits high mechanical properties as evidenced by a tear strength of 50 N/mm or more. Thus, the substrate for artificial leathers is well balanced between the mechanical properties, feel and light weight which are required particularly in sport shoes applications to an extent not conventionally attained.

Abstract: Methods for reducing the surface pilling tendency and improving abrasion resistance of a pillable fabric are disclosed. The methods include providing a pillable fabric including fibrils extending from the surfaces thereof, supporting the fabric, and exposing the fabric to a hydroentanglement process that imparts an energy in the range of at least about 4000 to 5000 KJoules/Kg of fabric using pressures of 200 bars or greater. The presence of fibrils on the fabric surface are reduced to an amount wherein the pilling production on the fabric is less than about 20% after 5,000 cycles of abrasion on a Martindale device according to ASTM D4970 testing standard and the fabric remaining mass is at least about 80% to 90% after 50,000 cycles of abrasion on a Martindale device according to ASTM D4966 testing standard.

Abstract: A drive system for imparting motion to a treating implement such as a toothbrush or the like includes a cam rotatably driven around an axis of rotation by a motor. The cam has a closed loop cam track eccentric to the axis of rotation. A control member is disposed between the cam and the treating implement head. The control member has a control slot extending completely through the control member. A pivot member is located between the control member and the treating implement head. The drive system further includes a drive shaft with its drive end freely mounted in the cam track. The drive shaft extends through the control slot and through the pivot member with its driven end operatively connected to the drive connection of the implement head. As a result, when the cam member is rotated the direction of movement of the drive shaft is controlled by the drive shaft being confined for sliding movement in the control slot. The drive shaft is still capable of rotating because of its free mounting in the cam track.
