Abstract: An object of the present invention is to provide a filling apparatus capable of reliably correcting the position of an overlap portion. The filling apparatus includes a forming ring including a plurality of forming rollers and disposed at a predetermined position along the traveling direction of a packaging material (11) in order to deform the packaging material (11) from a web-like shape to a tubular shape, and a longitudinal sealing device (41) for longitudinally sealing opposite side edges of the tubular packaging material (11). One of the forming rollers includes a flange (71 or 84) which is moved axially by means of a moving mechanism section (72). In this case, even when, within the forming ring, a side edge portion of the packaging material (11) of a certain size impinges on the flange (71 or 84), the flange (71 or 84) is caused to move accordingly to thereby avoid interfering with correction on the position of the overlap portion (LP).

Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for individually wrapping drinking straws applies a web of wrapping material to sequentially supplied straws while providing separately: (i) a crimping station for the wrapping material which secures it about the straws by providing longitudinal and transverse crimps and (ii) a cutting station for separating the wrapped straws. The discrete locations of the crimping and cutting stations enables faster and more reliable production by separating operations, which reduces the amount of mechanical interaction between dies at a single location, thereby reducing die bounce. Speed increases of 15-20 percent are readily achieved.

The lead reflects an incoming light beam from a walker or horseback rider back in the direction from which it emanated, preventing dangerous encounters during dusk or nighttime hours. The omnidirectionally reflective elements may be incorporated in a horse harness, or in a halter suitable for horses roaming in a paddock or field. The reflective elements are created by surrounding a central braided rope of nylon or polyethylene fibers with a cylindrically braided reflective sleeve. The braided reflective sleeve is composed of narrow width reflective strips thermally bonded to a flexible polymeric sheet with attached corner cube or microsphere retroreflectors. • Publication number: 20060026945
Abstract: A process for making a high-strength spun yarn begins by feeding one or more tows of substantially uncrimped continuous filaments of high-modulus material having a tensile modulus exceeding about 20×106 psi through a high-speed stretch-breaking apparatus operating at low total draft ratio (preferably about 2.0) to break the filaments into high-modulus staple fibers having an average length in the range of about 5 to 6 inches. The tows advantageously are heavy, for example, having a denier of about 25,000 to about 500,000. Following the stretch-breaking step, the staple fibers are collected in sliver cans, and the staple fibers are advanced from the sliver cans to a spinning machine, where the fibers are spun into yarn. An important aspect of the invention is that no intermediate processes are performed between the stretch-breaking and spinning processes, which minimizes disruption of the alignment of and damage to the staple fibers.

When the temperature of the differential pressure sensor (12) is not within a predetermined temperature range, estimation of the particulate matter deposit amount based on the pressure loss is restricted, and instead, the particulate matter deposit amount is estimated by accumulating a particulate matter deposit amount per unit time. In so doing, increases in the estimation error outside of the predetermined temperature range are prevented. Moreover, by applying these estimation methods selectively in accordance with the vehicle speed, the precision with which the particulate matter deposit amount is estimated outside of the predetermined temperature range is improved.

Abstract: Aspects according to the invention relate to a catalytic combustor system for a turbine engine and an associated method. Catalytic combustors are used in connection with turbine engines because they can minimize the formation of oxides of nitrogen during combustion. Despite this emissions advantage, catalytic combustion systems can increase the level of CO in the turbine exhaust. According to aspects of the invention, vortex formation devices includes vortex generators, swirlers and mixers can be placed downstream of each catalytic module surrounding the pilot nozzle so as to form one or more vortices in the otherwise substantially laminar flow exiting the modules. The vortices can create a suction so that a portion of the flow exiting the pilot nozzle is mixed with the flow exiting thee catalyst modules. The introduction of the higher temperature pilot flow can accelerate the catalytic reaction time, promoting burnout of the CO formed during combustion.

Abstract: A check valve is provided that includes a valve housing that has a side wall and a flow path therethrough, the side wall defining the flow path. The flow path includes an inlet, an outlet, and a centerline extending between the inlet and the outlet. At least one control member is positioned in the flow path and movable between a first position, wherein fluid flow through the valve housing is substantially prohibited and a second position wherein fluid flow is permitted. The side wall includes a stop configured to limit movement of the at least one control member at a pre-determined stop angle relative to the flow path centerline.

Abstract: An automatic recovery pilot nozzle support system for supporting a pilot nozzle in a fuel injection system of a turbine engine. The support system includes a sleeve extending from an orifice in a support housing, wherein the sleeve has a hollow opening for containing a pilot nozzle. The sleeve may increase the natural frequency of the pilot nozzle above an excitation zone, thereby limiting destructive vibrations. The sleeve may be attached to the support housing with an interference fit. The automatic recovery aspect of the support system enables the sleeve to maintain an interference fit with the support housing such that anytime the sleeve looses contact with the support housing, an insulative film of air forms between the sleeve and the support housing. The insulative film of air causes the temperature of the sleeve to increase, and the sleeve to expand and reform the interference fit with the support housing.

Abstract: In the present method, cold substances are transferred through a nozzle with moving parts. An insulating boot facilitates the method. The present method is generally suited for use in transferring cryogenic substances such as during the refueling of liquid natural gas vehicles. The present method causes an insulating layer to be created between a removable boot and a nozzle separating the ambient environment from the moving parts of the nozzle, restricting the incursion of such moisture from the layer and therefore, from the moving parts to avoid freezing up of the moving parts.

Abstract: A system for determining and monitoring wine temperature includes a housing, a first temperature sensor for sensing an ambient temperature and a second temperature sensor for sensing the temperature of a wine bottle, for example without opening the bottle. A processor processes the ambient temperature with the wine bottle temperature to determine the temperature of wine within the bottle. Measured temperatures may be displayed in Celsius or Fahrenheit units on a display, responsive to user inputs. A user may select a target wine temperature, which may further be displayed. The system may fit around the neck of the wine bottle or over the cork of the wine bottle, or the system may be configured as a coaster. Sensors may be contact or non-contact sensors such as infrared sensors. In one embodiment, an infrared system for determining and monitoring wine temperature is provided as a bottle stopper that replaces the cork of a wine bottle.

Abstract: A test module is connectable to the suction line of a condensing unit charged with refrigerant, and also electrically connectable to the unit, and is useable to automatically test for proper operation of the unit without having to connect an external test coil thereto or place pressurized nitrogen therein. After the module is connected to the unit, the unit's compressor is started to operate the unit in an “open loop” manner with no refrigerant recirculation therethrough. The module monitors the suction line pressure. If the sensed pressure reaches a predetermined magnitude within a predetermined time after compressor start-up, the module outputs a first signal indicating proper condensing unit operation. Absent this timely attainment of the predetermined pressure, a second signal is generated to indicate test failure. In the case of a heat pump condensing unit, the module tests for proper heating, cooling and defrost operation.
