Abstract: An electro-optical arrangement includes an electrochromic device which can take either a cleared (transparent) state, a first display state or a second display state, and a driving stage which provides first and second electrode-drive signals to drive the first and second electrodes of the device. At least one of the electrode-drive signals is supplied by way of a polysilicon thin-film buffer. The driving stage in an initial clearing operation outputs approximately equal voltages to the electrodes, which places the device into its transparent state. Subsequently the driver stage applies voltages to the electrodes, such that the device assumes either the first display state or the second display state. In either state it is arranged for the device not to be subjected to more than a safe operating voltage.

Abstract: Portable computing devices automatically interface with other computing devices to interact in a collaborative effort toward providing a single, seamless computing experience for a user. As a user walks into a room with a cellular telephone certain functionality and data can be automatically unloaded to a desktop computer or other device based on a user or device identification or state. For example, a conversation on a cellular telephone can be automatically migrated to a desktop telephone as a user sits down. As a user is about to leave a room for a meeting, the desktop computer can update the telephone with latest versions of certain files. Thus, devices can automatically aggregate and/or decouple to provide a user with a single computing experience. These portable devices can broadcast an extensible set of services to other devices as well as to a host computer or server.

Abstract: An input device encodes motion using a laser self-mixing velocimeter. The laser beam is directed at a disk or other moving member. As light from that beam is reflected back into the emitting cavity of the laser, the beam power output fluctuates because of the self-mixing effect and generates a beat signal. The beat signal frequency is used to determine the speed of the member's motion. The direction of motion is also determined based on the beat signal. A difference frequency analog phase locked loop filters the beat signal. A zero-point control disables motion detection when the average beat signal amplitude falls below a threshold. A triangle modulator generates a triangle wave for the laser bias current, with the triangle wave frequency being a submultiple of the beat signal frequency.

Abstract: A method for geographically registering a perspective image of a location assigns elevation values to elements or pixels of a two dimensional array of image elements or pixels of the location. The elevation value for each image pixel is obtained using a corresponding database stored reference digital elevation model, or a three dimensional surface model of the location. The reference elevation model or surface model is composed of rows and columns of elevation values corresponding to two dimensions of location values at a sensed location shown in the image, or is composed of a three dimensional surface or volume model of the location, such as a computer-aided design model or any other means of describing the three dimensional characteristics of the sensed location.

Abstract: A method of globally analyzing intersections between objects in computer animation includes providing objects represented by meshes, with each of the meshes being formed by a set of vertices, where a set of pairs of vertices defines a set of edges of the mesh. All edges of the meshes are checked to determine if the edges intersect with any of the meshes. An intersection path, formed by the intersection of the meshes, is traced and which vertices that are contained within the intersection path are determined. A polarity of each of the contained vertices is set to indicate that those vertices are contained within the intersection path. The analysis forms the backbone of a collision-response algorithm for unoriented objects such as cloth that is better than previous existing algorithms. The analysis also allows objects to be simulated even when hand-animated elements of the simulation have extreme amounts of interpenetration.

Abstract: A complex procedural surface can be expressed based on some constructive solid geometry operations performed on primitive procedural surfaces. The domain based representation of the complex procedural surface includes implicit curves of intersection. During pre-processing, the parts of the domain based representation to be triangulated are first sub-divided into simple triangles not bound on any side by an edge related to the parameterized regions of the implicit curve and curve visibility triangles. The coarse pre-processed triangulated mesh is later refined during runtime by further sub-dividing the coarse mesh to add triangles with curve based edges and non-curve based edges to generate a mesh of sampling triangles. The more refined sampling triangle mesh is further refined by applying geometry instancing to map appropriate instance meshes into the appropriate sampling triangles to create an even more refined triangulated mesh at runtime for rendering.

Abstract: A system and method to provide a hierarchical stencil buffer, the method including creating, for a light source of a graphics scene, a hierarchical stencil buffer (HSB) to store stencil values relative to the light source for a plurality of hierarchical levels of pixels, and storing the stencil values in the HSB in a compressed state. In some embodiments, a shadow test may be performed on a pixel to determine whether the pixel is in shadow relative to the light source, wherein the determining references a stored stencil value for a first hierarchical level in the HSB.

Abstract: In an interactive media environment, a model is provided where applications, each comprising zero or more script components and zero or more markup components, are themselves handled as visual elements having a Z order. A resource-efficient rendering order is provided where the application that has focus in an interactive media environment (by virtue of its receipt of user events) is rendered first. The remaining applications are rendered in top down order, i.e., in reverse Z order. Rendering is performed by drawing into one or more graphics buffers associated with respective applications. Frames for applications are composited from the graphics buffers bottoms up, in Z order, to provide the display with the correct appearance.

Abstract: A method for control over the level of detail within a rendered object is provided. The method may be a program embodied on a machine readable medium. The method identifies a set of parent vertices defining a polygon within a rendered object. A child vertex of the set of parent vertices is generated and pushed toward a predetermined location within the anticipated contours of the rendered object. One of the parent vertices is then connected to the child vertex to generate an additional polygon. A graphics engine configured to control a level of detail in a rendered object through the generation of additional polygons in the rendered object is also provided.
