  • Patent number: 7173381
Abstract: The invention provide a cost effective way of determining the status of a light emitting device, such as a light emitting device in a non-emitting display device. The apparatus includes a plurality of light emitting devices arranged in a predefined configuration, a voltage supply coupled to the light emitting devices for making a current flow through the light emitting devices, and electrically conductive devices positioned a predetermined distance away from the light emitting devices, wherein each of the electrically conductive devices generates a voltage in response to current flowing through one of the light emitting devices. An AND gate coupled to the electrically conductive devices receives the voltage from each of the electrically conductive devices through an input and generates an output. A status determining device coupled to the output of the AND gate determines the status of the light emitting devices based on this output.

  • Patent number: 7173382
Abstract: An apparatus and methods for balancing current in multiple negative impedance gas discharge lamp loads. Embodiments advantageously include balancing transformer configurations that are relatively cost-effective, reliable, and efficient. Embodiments include configurations that are applicable to an unrestrained number of gas discharge tubes, such as cold cathode fluorescent lamps. The balancing transformer configuration techniques permit a relatively small number of power inverters, such as one power inverter, to power multiple paralleled lamps or paralleled groups of lamps with balancing transformers coupling the lamps or groups of lamps in a zigzag topology. One embodiment of a balancing transformer includes a safety winding which can be used to protect the balancing transformer in the event of a lamp failure and can be used to provide an indication of a failed lamp.

  • Patent number: 7173386
Abstract: An apparatus for over current detection of a dual motor for use in a vehicle. This invention prevents each motor from burning out by more precisely detecting an over current of each motor in the dual motor within an overall drive area of the dual motor. • Patent number: 7173390
Abstract: A method and a device are provided for detecting the occurrence of a malfunction upon movement of an element by a driving system. While the element is being moved, a difference between a predetermined value and an actual value is determined at regular intervals by means of a processor. A derivative of the difference is determined by the processor at regular intervals. The difference and the derivative both fluctuate around an equilibrium value. Subsequently, only the values on one side of the equilibrium value of both the difference and the derivative are sampled. The sampled values are multiplied and the result is compared with a reference value by means of the processor. The occurrence of a malfunction is established if the result of the multiplication is higher than the reference value.

Abstract: A metrology instrument includes an eddy current sensor that is mounted to and concentric with a confocal distance sensor. By measuring the precise vertical placement of the eddy current probe with respect to the surface of the sample using the confocal distance sensor, the accuracy and precision of the eddy current measurement is improved. Because the confocal distance sensor and the eddy current sensor are confocal, there is no need to move the relative lateral positions between the sample and instrument, between the distance measurement and the eddy current measurement, thereby reducing error in the measurement as well are maximizing the throughput by minimizing the required stage travel for a single measurement.

Abstract: A method of determining a first thickness of a first conductive layer formed of a first conductive material on a target substrate, the target substrate further having a second conductive layer formed of a second conductive material different from the first conductive material, is disclosed. The method includes positioning a first eddy current sensor at a given position relative to the target substrate, the first eddy current sensor being in a spaced-apart relationship with respect to the target substrate when positioned at the given position. The method also includes measuring, using the first eddy current sensor while the first eddy current sensor is positioned at the give position, a first set of electrical responses that includes at least one of a first voltage measurement and a first current measurement, the measuring the first set of electrical responses being performed at a first target substrate temperature.

  • Patent number: 7173419
Abstract: Magnetic field sensors, each generating an electrical output signal in proportion to the local magnetic field, are lithographically fabricated on a semiconductor substrate with a small spatial separation. The lateral dimension of the sensors and the separation length are the order of the minimum lithographic feature size. Comparing the electrical signals of the sensors results in a measurement of the local magnetic field gradient. Large field gradients, that vary on a small spatial scale, may be associated small magnetic structures such as microscopic magnetic particles. Detection of a field gradient can be used to infer the presence of a magnetic particle.

Abstract: A magnetic sensor assembly comprising magnetic detection elements is provided. In a magnetic sensor assembly 100 according to the present invention, a magnetic detection element 140 is fixed to a base member 110 and, by having the base member 110 stand upright, it is possible to stand the magnetic detection element 140 upright. Thereby, it becomes easy to manufacture magnetic detection devices which detect three-axis components of terrestrial magnetism vector. In the base member 110, first terminals 120 are provided on a first surface 112 whereas second terminals 124 are provided on a second surface 114. The first terminals 120 are electrically connected with electrodes of the magnetic detection element 140 whereas the second terminals 124 are electrically connected to external wires.

  • Patent number: 7173424
Abstract: A configuration of an NMR apparatus is provided. In the NMR apparatus, a magnetic field space of higher uniformity is generated by split superconducting magnets. At the same time, it is provided with a cryo probe excellent in cooling capability and sensitivity between two superconducting solenoid coils constructed in very close proximity to each other. For this purpose, a probe coil provided between the two superconducting solenoid coils is so constructed that the following is implemented: a certain distance is ensured between a substrate with a coil formed thereon and another, and the substrates and spacer substrates for cooling are alternately laminated. The spacer substrates are cooled by a cold head of sapphire. When the probe coil is inserted in the same direction as a sample tube (direction perpendicular to the static magnetic field), the spacer substrates cannot be coupled directly by the cold head of sapphire.

  • Patent number: 7173425
Abstract: An RF coil assembly is presented that incorporates balun networks to eliminate standing waves from cables used to apply a voltage to multiple drive ports of the coil. Each drive port is driven by an applied voltage that is shifted 90 degrees in the tangential direction. Further, all drive ports are located on one end-ring of the coil, e.g. the superior end-ring. The inequality of the efficiency of the drive ports is reduced such that a substantially circular polarization in the volume of the coil is maintained. The present invention reduces asymmetrical loading by a patient as a result of patient asymmetry and patient contact with the opposite end-ring of the coil that normally negatively affects circular polarization and conventional coil configurations.

Abstract: A portable circuit interrupter shutoff testing device and method, including a high current switch controlled by a timing circuit that allows current to flow through the switch and a small series resistance (in order to trip the instantaneous-trip function of the interrupter, as opposed to the overload-trip) for a short time period relative to the sine wave of the electrical power. A button activates the timing circuit which in turn activates the switch and current flows limited by the internal resistor of the device. By limiting the on time of the device to one of a few half cycles, the user can test if the circuit interrupter responds as quickly as specified by the manufacturer. A method includes receiving a stimulation indication, and selectively connecting an electrical load is sufficient to trigger the instantaneous-trip function of the circuit-interrupter.
