Abstract: The present invention provides for improved brightness and reduced power consumption in transflective displays operating in transmissive mode. The invention is based on the inclusion of a depolarizing means (206) between the transflector (201) and the rear stack polarizer (202). The depolarizer (206) is arranged to selectively depolarize light originating from the backlight (203) and reflected by the transflector (201), without substantially affecting the light that is transmitted through the transflector. Thereby part of the reflected light is transmitted back through the rear stack polarizer (202) and can be recycled in the backlight (203). The invention is applicable to any transflective display having a transflector (201) that changes polarization of light originating from the backlight (203) upon reflection back towards the backlight (202).

Abstract: With substrates to be bonded together becoming larger, there are problems in that a bonding apparatus needs to be built larger to maintain accuracy of products and operation of such a bonding apparatus becomes more complicated. A bonding apparatus includes Z-axis drive mechanisms, an upper chamber, and a lower chamber. The Z-axis drive mechanisms for moving an upper frame vertically are disposed at four corners of a mount. The upper chamber is suspended from the upper frame and has an upper table inside. The lower chamber has a lower table inside. The lower table is supported on the mount via a plurality of support legs. The upper chamber and the lower chamber are united together through a seal ring to define a vacuum chamber. The upper table is coupled to the upper frame and moved by the Z-axis drive mechanisms via the upper frame. Moving the upper frame moves the upper chamber vertically to open or close the vacuum chamber.

Abstract: A variable focus liquid crystal lens includes a nematic liquid crystal/monomer mixture having a spatially inhomogenous polymer network structure, and an electrode for applying a substantially uniform voltage to the nematic liquid crystal/monomer mixture. The lens is created within a cell by applying a substantially uniform electric field to the nematic liquid crystal/monomer mixture within the cell, while simultaneously irradiating the nematic liquid crystal/monomer mixture using a laser beam having a shaped intensity distribution, so as to induce formation of a spatially inhomogenous polymer network structure within the cell.

Abstract: A pair of sunglasses is provided with a polarized region in the upper portion of the eyeglass lens and a non-polarized region in the bottom portion of the eyeglass lens so as to permit reading of polarized instruments through the non-polarized region. The two regions may be separated horizontally at the halfway point or below the halfway point such that, by tilting one's head upwardly and looking through the non-polarized region, one can readily read the instruments which would appear black through the polarized region due to the cross-polarization. In one embodiment the polarization level is gradually decreased from the top to the bottom of the lens in a polarization gradient in which there is no polarization at the bottom portion of the lens.
