The damper includes at least two pairs of rare earth permanent magnets configured to provide a narrow, generally planar gap, and backing plates positioned to complete a magnetic circuit passing through the magnets and the gap. A flat conductor plate is positioned to be freely movable in the gap. Any time-varying force on the conductor plate results in the generation of eddy currents in the plate, and these in turn generate a mechanical force on the plate, which resists the time-varying force and produces a damping effect. With careful selection of materials for the magnets, the backing plates and the conductive plate, the damper is effective over a wide temperature range that includes cryogenic temperatures, and is operable over a wide range of damping levels.

A first and second electrode is deposited on a respective one of the input and the output surfaces of the insulating substrate. The microchannel amplifier amplifying emissions propagating through the at least one microchannel pore when the first and second electrodes are biased.

Abstract: An object detection system is provided that projects one or more patterns onto a monitored area, captures one or more live images of the monitored area, and detects objects that enter the monitored area by detecting changes in the one or more patterns in the live images. Such an object detection system may be less susceptible to dynamic lighting conditions, and more sensitive to object intrusions. One illustrative example projects a pattern of dots onto an area to be monitored, and captures images corresponding to the monitored area, comparing live images to reference images to determine whether an object has intruded a defined area. The area to be monitored does not consist solely of the area captured in the images and may include a volume illuminated by the pattern as well as a volume corresponding to the captured image area. Objects not in the field of view may be detected by the disclosed systems and methods. Several illustrative analytical methods are disclosed as well.

Abstract: An optical encoder, a system and a method for using the same which has a shaft extending from within an interior of a housing. A light emitting element, a light detector and a plate are located within the interior of the housing. The plate is connected to the shaft. Movement of the shaft may move the plate to block, to deflect and/or to absorb light from the light emitting element. The light detector senses and/or detects movement of the shaft by an amount, a direction and/or an intensity of light transmitted by the light emitting element. The shaft rotates, twists and/or turns to move a shutter which blocks, reflects, absorbs and/or deflects light from the light emitting element. The shaft contacts a spring and/or a ball to produce a sounds which indicates the shaft is rotating, twisting and/or turning. The light detector outputs a signal via a cable based on the amount, the direction and/or the intensity of light. The signal corresponds to the position and/or location of the shaft.

Abstract: An encoder having a code carrier, light source, and detector is disclosed. The code carrier includes a track that emits light at each of a plurality of track points on the track when that track point is illuminated with light having a predetermined spectrum. Each of the track points emits light having a spectrum that is different from the spectrum emitted by others of the track points. The light source illuminates a portion of the track with light of the predetermined illumination spectrum. The detector provides a plurality of signals indicative of the spectrum of light leaving the portion of the track when the portion includes one of the track points. The code carrier moves with respect to the detector, and the signals define the relative position of the code carrier with respect to the detector.

Abstract: A photosensitive apparatus, such as scanner, includes a plurality of pixels, each pixel having associated therewith a set of photosensors, each photosensor filtered to record a primary color. The photosensors are exposed to light of each primary color separately, thereby deriving test signals. A cross-color correction factor for the pixel is derived from the test signals. The cross-color correction factor is used in processing signals output from the pixel when an image is being recorded, so as to isolate the effects of signal crosstalk between closely-spaced photosensors of different colors.
