  • Patent number: 7232533
Abstract: The bichromal element spinner apparatus provides the forming of substantially spherical bichromal elements from pigmented molten, but hardenable material compounds which are delivered centrally to a spinning webbed disk through opposite ends of hollow shaft that also spins with the disk. The molten materials are injected into cavities formed between the shaft and the web portions of the disk such that the molten materials are spun outwardly on the opposite surfaces of the disk towards the tip of the disk, where the hardenable materials adhere to each other without mixing, thereby spinning off to bichromal elements. Shrouds attached to the shaft and having no intervening support members over the spinning disk provide quiescent air mass between the disk and the shrouds so as to yield bichromal elements with substantial hemispherical integrity.

  • Patent number: 7232549
Abstract: Devices useful in liquid transfer applications and in particular, devices for controlling the free surface of a source liquid in acoustic liquid ejection systems are disclosed. The devices advantageously maintain a source liquid to be transferred at a constant height and reduce disturbances formed in the liquid due to droplet ejection. In one variation, a well plate includes a plurality of wells each having a capillary. Source liquid in a well moves up the capillary due to capillary action and arrives at a certain height. The height arrived at remains constant despite the source liquid depleting from the well during the ejection process. The capillary can be separately joined or integral with the well plate. An acoustic wave emitter positioned adjacent to the well plate emits a focused acoustic beam that causes at least some of the liquid in the capillary to be ejected.

  • Patent number: 7232550
Abstract: A fluid-burning lamp that delivers a fragrance(s) and is aesthetically pleasing. The fluid-burning lamp includes a fragrance-dispensing element that contains a material that slowly melts and forms a liquid pool when the lamp is lit. The slow-melting material gives the fluid-burning lamp the appearance of a traditional wax candle, when the lamp is viewed from the top. Other elements of the fluid-burning lamp include a fluid container for holding a combustible fluid to be used as fuel for the burn, and a wick assembly containing a wick having a lower portion that extends into the combustible fluid. The fluid container for holding the combustible fluid may also hold various immersions, such as, for example, fruits, colored marbles, leaves, seeds, sprigs, or flowers, in order to provide the ultimate in flexibility for home décor.

  • Patent number: 7232554
Abstract: A process for the recovery of arsenic trioxide from acid solutions, particularly the aqueous acid effluent produced by a gas-washing process in the pyrometallurgy of copper sulfide ores is provided. Generally, the process comprises concentrating the acid solution in one or more evaporators in series; crystallizing arsenic contained in the concentrated solution as arsenic trioxide crystals; filtering the crystallized solution to obtain a solid phase comprising impure arsenic trioxide crystals; and purifying the solid phase to obtain a purified crystal product comprising arsenic trioxide. The process produces a commercially salable arsenic trioxide product without producing any solid or liquid residues subject to special handling or treatment regulations.

  • Patent number: 7232557
Abstract: The invention describes a method of preparing magnetic ferrites from layered precursors in which Fe2+ is first introduced into the layers of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in order to prepare Me-Fe2+—Fe3+ LDHs, and then by utilizing the easily oxidized nature of Fe2+, binary or multi-component ferrite materials containing Fe3+ in a single crystalline phase can be prepared. Values of the saturation magnetization of ferrites prepared by the method are significantly increased compared with ferrites prepared by traditional methods. Because the metal elements in the layered precursor have the characteristics of a high degree of dispersion, high activity and small particle size (average particle size 40-200 nm), no milling is required before calcination, thus simplifying the production process, shortening the production period, reducing capital investment in equipment and economizing on energy costs. In addition, the method does not corrode production equipment and does not pollute the environment.

Abstract: Solid, shaped and fired fibers of Ti4O7 and Ti5O9 are made by firing TiO2 fibers in a reducing atmosphere. In a first aspect, the TiO2 fibers are made by extruding into air a viscous TiO2 gel and heat treating the resulting green fibers to remove solvent, decompose and to volatilize undesired constituents to form electrically conductive, refractory fibers of Ti4O7 and Ti5O9. In a second aspect, solid, shaped and fired fibers of Ti4O7 and Ti5O9 are made by firing extruded fibers from mixtures of TiO2.
