Abstract: Presented is an improved concept airfoil, or more properly called fluid dynamic foil, that promises coefficients of lift several times better than present day airfoils or hydrofoils. This is accomplished by use of a rotary Coanda fluid accelerator that is part of the boundary of a high camber or fat airfoil shape. Acceleration of oncoming fluids over the low static pressure side of the airfoil by the rotary element not only decreases the static pressure thereby increasing lift but also improves flow characteristics over the low static pressure side of the airfoil which reduces or eliminates flow separation and its associated turbulent drag effects. Alternative ways to eliminate the flow separation are also presented as well as are ways to control the angle of attack of the airfoil. The concept presented is applicable to aircraft wings, rotary wings such as used on helicopters, hydrofoils, wind and water turbine blades, and the like.

Abstract: A device for guiding a hose of an industrial robot, having at least one supply line, with a guide element wherein the hose can move against the restoring force of a restoring element. The guide element has an axial guide segment for guiding the hose in its longitudinal direction and a compensation segment adjoining the guide segment. The compensation segment is formed by a housing configured such that a lateral deflection of the supply line—in relation to the longitudinal direction—is made possible in the housing across an axial section. The guide element is formed so that it can swing open. At the entry side into the guide element the hose is surrounded by an abutment for the restoring element. The abutment may be inserted in the guide element or mounted in a fastening clamp block.

Abstract: A trapping position 30 is defined on a substrate 1, and an electrode pattern 2 is formed on the substrate 1, having a first pair of electrodes 21 including electrodes 22 and 23 formed at positions opposite each other with the trapping position 30 placed therebetween along a diagonal x-axis, and a second pair of electrodes 26 including electrodes 27 and 28 formed at positions opposite each other with the trapping position 30 placed therebetween along a y-axis orthogonal to the x-axis. The atomic device alternately switches between a first state and a second state to trap a neutral atom at the trapping position 30; in the first state, the electrode 22 of the first pair of electrodes 21 is set at a positive potential +V0 with respect to a reference potential and the electrode 23 is set at a negative potential ?V0, and in the second state, the electrode 27 of the second pair of electrodes 26 is set at the positive potential +V0 and the electrode 28 is set at the negative potential ?V0.

Abstract: Particular aspects provide novel methods for analysis of ion populations, the methods comprising filtering and selecting an ion population using a low-field dual-gate ion mobility spectrometer comprising a drift tube, the spectrometer operating at a pressure of at least 100 Torr, to provide mobility-selected ions. Certain aspects comprise: (i) subsequently accumulating the low-field selected ions in an ion trap (e.g., an MS ion trap) and mass spectrometry analysis; (ii) introducing the low-field selected ions into a high-field ion mobility spectrometer for separating thereby (optionally followed by mass spectrometry); and (iii) introducing the low-field selected ions into an ion trap mass spectrometer, and subsequently into a second low-field ion mobility spectrometer (e.g., a non-dual gate spectrometer operating at less than about 100 Torr). Additional aspects provide novel apparatus and combination thereof for performing the disclosed methods.

Abstract: In an RF ion trap mass spectrometer, selected parent ions are fragmented by collisions or electrons and a spectrum of the ion fragments is measured. The measured fragment ion spectrum is then analyzed for the presence of a dominant ion species and, when a dominant ion species is present, selected parent ions are fragmented and a spectrum of the ion fragments is again measured, but with an additional collision excitation of the dominant ion species. The resulting daughter ion spectrum is qualitatively improved.

Abstract: An imbalanced radio frequency (RF) field creates a retarding barrier near the exit aperture of a multipole ion guide, in combination with the extracting DC field such that the barrier provides an m/z dependent cut of ion sampling. Contrary to the prior art, the mass dependent sampling provides a well-conditioned ion beam suitable for other mass spectrometric devices. The mass selective sampling is suggested for improving duty cycle of o-TOF MS, for injecting ions into a multi-reflecting TOF MS in a zoom mode, for parallel MS-MS analysis in a trap-TOF MS, as well as for moderate mass filtering in fragmentation cells and ion reactors. With the aid of resonant excitation, the mass selective ion sampling is suggested for mass analysis.

Abstract: An ITMS includes an inlet for receiving a sample that will be tested for a substance of interest. The inlet communicates with an ionization chamber and a drift chamber communicates with the downstream end of the ionization chamber. A first grid electrode extends across the downstream end of the ionization chamber and a second grid electrode is slightly downstream from and parallel to the first grid electrode. A slight potential bias is applied to the first grid electrode to hold the ions in the potential well between the first and second grid electrodes. However a pulse is applied periodically to the first grid electrode to accelerate ions into the drift chamber. The accumulation of the ions in the potential well prior to generation of the pulse results in a thinner band of ions ejected into the drift chamber and hence achieves higher resolution.

Abstract: A base plate for mass spectrometry analysis is disclosed, which is used in a method in which a substance immobilized on a surface of the base plate is desorbed from the surface by application of laser light thereto and the ion of the desorbed substance is captured for mass spectrometry analysis. The base plate includes, on at least a portion of the surface thereof, a roughened metal surface capable of exciting local plasmon when exposed to laser light. The roughened metal surface is formed, for example, by forming numerous micropores in a surface of an alumina layer and filling gold particles in the micropores. Each gold particle has a head portion having a size larger than a diameter of the micropore and projecting from the surface of the alumina layer. Use of this base plate allows use of lower-power laser light.

Abstract: In a method for increasing the kinetic energy of an ion in a linear electrode structure, axial motion of the ion is constrained substantially to a selected axial end the electrode structure. The ion is driven to move axially from the selected end toward the other end and to reflect back toward the selected end. Constraining may be effected by adjusting one or more DC voltages applied to the ends and a central region of the electrode structure to create an axial potential well in the selected end. Driving may be affected by adjusting the DC voltage applied to the selected end to a magnitude greater than the value applied during the constraining step. The constraining and driving steps may be repeated a number of times. The method may be performed in connection with collision-induced dissociation.
