Abstract: An electron-emitting device includes a lower electrode, an emitter section formed from a dielectric material, and an upper electrode having fine through holes formed therein. When a drive voltage is applied between the lower electrode and the upper electrode, the electron-emitting device emits electrons from the emitter section through the fine through holes of the upper electrode. A protective film of oxide (e.g., silicon oxide) is formed on the upper surface of the emitter section. Thus, the upper surface of the emitter section is protected from attack of ionized gas molecules produced during electron-emitting operations. As a result, the upper surface of the emitter section becomes unlikely to be metalized, and thus, the amount of emitted electrons is unlikely to drop with the number of electron-emitting operations.

A capacitance element is disposed between the gate and the source of a driving TFT, video signals are inputted to the gate electrode, and then it is in the floating state. At this time, when the gate-source voltage of the driving TFT exceeds the threshold, the driving TFT is turned on. Suppose an EL element is deteriorated and the anode potential rises, that is, the source potential of the driving TFT rises, the potential of the gate electrode of the driving TFT, being in the floating state by coupling of the capacitance element, is to rise by the same amount. Accordingly, even when the anode potential rises due to the deteriorated EL element, the rise is added to the gate electrode potential as it is, and the gate-source voltage of the driving TFT is allowed to be constant.

Abstract: A rotor is provided with slits each of which serves as a flux barrier blocking a magnetic flux. A direction shown by an arrow is a forward direction along which the rotor rotates when a vehicle moves forward. Each of the slits has a width tapering down from a trailing position toward a leading position with respect to the forward direction. The rotation in a reverse direction opposite to the forward direction shown by the arrow causes larger magnetic flux linkage than the rotation in the forward direction, and hence generates high torque and high counterelectromotive force. Therefore, in the reverse direction, the rotor cannot serve as a motor to produce an output unless high voltage is applied thereto. Accordingly, the torque generated in the reverse direction is used for regenerative operation. It is thereby possible to provide a vehicle drive system capable of exhibiting performance in a well-balanced manner between power running and regenerative operation, and a vehicle provided with the same.

Abstract: A power supply unit includes an input-side rectifying circuit (4), an inverter (8) and an output-side rectifying circuit (12), which include power semiconductor devices. The power supply unit is powered during a powering period, and the powering is interrupted during a pausing period. The powering and pausing periods alternate. A fan (18) is driven during each powering period to cool the power semiconductor devices. A temperature detector (30) measures the temperature of the power semiconductor devices and develops a measured-temperature representative signal. A setter (38) produces a reference value, which decreases over the pausing period from the measured-temperature representative signal at the beginning of the pausing period to an intended-temperature representative signal representing the temperature to be attained by the power semiconductor devices at the end of the pausing period.

Abstract: Torque control capability is provided to a position controlled robot by calculating joint position inputs from transformation of the desired joint torques. This is based on calculating the transfer function 1/E(s), which relates the desired joint torque to joint position. Here E(s) is a servo transfer function D(s) or an effective servo transfer function D*(s). The use of an effective servo transfer function D*s) is helpful in cases where joint nonlinearities are significant. The effective servo transfer function D*(s) is defined with respect to an ideal joint transfer function G*(s)=1/(Ieffs2+beffs), where Ieff is an effective moment of inertia and beff is an effective damping coefficient.

Abstract: In a state wherein a solenoid switching valve in a gas passage in communication with air chambers is closed, an assist device produces an assisting driving force by compression or expansion of a gas as a knee joint (specific joint) of a leg bends or stretches, and applies the produced assisting driving force to the knee joint. In a valve-open state of the solenoid switching valve, no assisting driving force is produced. The solenoid switching valve is constructed of a solenoid switching valve having a self-holding feature, and installed in the gas passage such that a pressure difference between air chambers acts in a valve closing direction of a valve element in a predetermined period during which the solenoid switching valve is closed. This arrangement effectively reduces the power consumption of the solenoid switching valve by a simple construction.

Abstract: Temperature compensation methods and equipment for charging electric storage batteries are described. Control over battery charging includes measurement of battery temperature at the commencement of a charging event, and use of inflection analysis of a charger voltage-time curve to detect the attainment of a distinctive signal point in the event. To compensate for the variations with initial battery temperature on the relation of the signal point to a different battery condition of interest, control of a charging event includes use of the measured battery temperature to obtain from a controller memory information about the applicable values of process parameters pertinent to those temperature-variable process factors. The temperature of a battery charger which includes such controls preferably is used as a workable approximation to battery temperature, so that batteries of conventional construction can benefit from use of the disclosed methods and equipment.
