Abstract: An image processing device is connectable to a host device through a network. In the image processing device, a storage unit stores an identifier capable of distinguishing the image processing device, a communication unit receives data from the host device, a data control unit analyzes the received data, and if the received data include information equivalent to the identifier, a processor executes processing specified by the received data. The host device can learn the identifier by broadcasting a query on the network, then place the identifier in a setting request broadcast on the network, and thereby make or modify network address settings in the image processing device from a remote location.

Abstract: An image presentation device (100) incorporates an optical combiner (130) that utilizes a multi-state optical switch (131, 137) for use with a plurality of colored light sources (122, 124,126). The switch (131,137) includes an electronically switchable holographic optical element HOE (131) having a first and a second mode of operation. Light from first and second light sources (124, 126) passes through HOE (131) in a diffracted manner in at least one of the first and second modes of operation. Light from a third light source (122) is reflected by a reflector (137) in a third mode of operation. The combiner (130) operates to combine light from the various light sources (122, 124, 126) into a common light path.

Abstract: Even when a tilt error is caused in a holographic memory in a direction perpendicular to a surface including optical axes of a signal beam and a reference beam (radial tilt direction), the signal beam and the reference beam are allowed to enter the holographic memory at adequate angles relative thereto at all times by suppression of the tilt error. A reference tilt hologram for specifying a reference incident angle of the reference beam in a radial tilt direction is recorded in advance on a holographic memory medium. During recording and reproducing operations, the reference beam is emitted to a recording position of the reference tilt hologram and the reference incident angle (reference angle Sr) of the reference beam in the radial tilt direction is detected based on a received light state. A tilt actuator (19) for displacing the holographic memory medium in the radial tilt direction is driven to adjust an incident angle of the reference beam in the radial tilt direction to the reference angle Sr.

Abstract: A two dimensional scanner comprising a first mirror (1) rotatable around a first axis (4), and a second mirror (2) rotatable around a second axis (5), said first and second reflective surfaces being formed on the same substrate (3), with their axis of rotation (4, 5) being non parallel in a common plane, and a reflective surface (6) arranged such that a light beam reflected by said first mirror (1) is subsequently reflected by said surface (6) and finally by said second mirror (2). According to the invention, the first mirror is thus capable of scanning said light beam in a first direction and said second mirror is capable of scanning said light beam in a second direction. The result is a very compact two dimensional scanner, where the two individual mirrors are independent of each other, but still can be provided very close together, eliminating, or at least reducing distortion of the image.

Abstract: A device assembly (216) for positioning a device (222) in a precision apparatus (10) includes a first housing (224), a second housing (226), a movement ball joint (229), and a locking ball joint (249). The first housing (224) retains the device (222). The second housing (226) is coupled to an apparatus frame (12). The movement ball joint (229) facilitates movement of the first housing (224) relative to the second housing (226). The locking ball joint (249) facilitates locking of the first housing (224) to the second housing (226). The movement ball joint (229) can guide movement of the first housing (224) relative to the second housing (226). For example, the first housing (224) can include a first guide surface (230) and the second housing (226) can include a second guide surface (232). In this embodiment, the guide surfaces (230) (232) cooperate to form the movement ball joint (229). Additionally, each of the guide surfaces (230) (232) can form a portion of a sphere.

Abstract: An optical device has an electrically insulating first barrier layer disposed over a first electrode layer, a photoconductive layer disposed over the first barrier layer, and a carrier confining layer disposed over the photoconducting layer. The carrier confining layer defines a volume throughout which a plurality of carrier traps are dispersed. Further, an electrically insulating second barrier layer is disposed over the carrier confining layer, a light blocking layer is disposed over the second barrier layer for blocking light of a selected wavelength band. A reflective layer is disposed over the light blocking layer for reflecting light within the selected wavelength band, a birefringent or dispersive layer is disposed over the reflective layer, and an optically transmissive second electrode layer is disposed over the birefringent or dispersive layer. A method is also disclosed, as are additional layers intervening between those detailed above.

Abstract: A MEMS apparatus for scanning an optical beam comprises a mirror operative to perform a rotational motion to a maximum rotation angle around a mirror rotation axis formed in a double active layer silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. The apparatus may include a bouncing mechanism operative to provide a bouncing event and to reverse the rotational motion. The bouncing event provides the mirror with a piecewise linear response to actuation by intrinsically nonlinear electrostatic forces. In a particular embodiment, the bouncing mechanism includes a vertical comb drive stator built in the same active layer of the double active layer SOI substrate, while actuator comb drive stators are built in a different active layer.

Abstract: An optical, multi-channel, Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK) receiver demodulates multiple Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) channels using at least one interferometer. This distributes expense of the interferometer(s) over all channels of an optical signal, allowing for deployment of cost-effective, scalable, wideband, WDM DPSK systems. For example, for an 80 channel WDM link, the receiver uses a single interferometer instead of eighty interferometers and associated stabilization hardware, dramatically reducing size, weight, power, and cost. The receiver is architecturally compatible with existing interferometer technologies so previous development and qualification efforts can be leveraged. This allows for expedited technology insertion into existing optical communications networks, including terrestrial and space-based optical networks.
