Abstract: A discretely controlled micromirror array lens (DCMAL) consists of many discretely controlled micromirrors (DCMs) and actuating components. The actuating components control the positions of DCMs electrostatically. The optical efficiency of the DCMAL is increased by locating a mechanical structure upholding DCMs and the actuating components under DCMs to increase an effective reflective area. The known microelectronics technologies can remove the loss in effective reflective area due to electrode pads and wires. The lens can correct aberrations by controlling DCMs independently. Independent control of each DCM is possible by known microelectronics technologies. The DCM array can also form a lens with arbitrary shape and/or size, or a lens array comprising the lenses with arbitrary shape and/or size.

Abstract: An aspect of the present invention provides a master medium for perpendicular magnetic transfer, comprising: a disk-like substrate on a surface of which a plurality of protruding magnetic-layer patterns corresponding to information to be transferred to a magnetic recording medium targeted for transfer are formed. In the master medium for perpendicular magnetic transfer, a ratio of a circumferential width L of the protruding magnetic-layer patterns to a circumferential gap S between the protruding magnetic-layer patterns is L/S<1. According to the aspect of the present invention, good magnetic transfer can be performed and, therefore, a perpendicular magnetic recording medium (a slave disk) that is free from defects and has a good C/N ratio can be obtained. In addition, it is possible to perform good magnetic transfer.

Abstract: A system and method for determining head-disk contact (HDC) in a disk drive uses the signal from the magnetoresistive (MR) read head and does not require the presence of magnetic transitions on the disk. The method thus has application in head-disk testers or “spin stands” to facilitate the design and testing of slider-suspension assemblies and fly-height actuators, as well as in disk drives to take corrective action before HDC and/or to control fly-height actuators. The invention is also a magnetic recording disk drive that has a fly-height actuator and a low-pass filter and comparator circuit for the MR signal. When the output of the filter exceeds a threshold the comparator circuit output indicates the onset of HDC. The comparator circuit output is input to a digital processor or controller. When the controller determines the onset of HDC or that HDC has occurred, it generates a control signal that can be used to cause the disk drive to take corrective action.

Each feedforward controller is designed to be optimal for a canceling a specific associated RV spectrum. The actual RV spectrum acting on the disk drive is determined and the proper feedforward controller is then selected and used to generate a compensation signal for canceling the RV. Each feedforward controller may be tested when the disk drive is experiencing the RV, and the resulting compensation signal and PES measured. The feedforward controller that produces the best external disturbance cancellation is then selected as the feedforward controller. Abstract: A manufacturing method of a thin-film magnetic head in which a magneto-sensitive portion is formed in a position where the width along the track-width direction is sufficiently small and a bias field from a bias means can be sufficiently received, and the influence of reattachments on reading output is avoided. The manufacturing method comprises steps of: forming an MR multilayer film comprising a foundation layer; a magneto-sensitive portion; and a cap layer of a material having an ion beam etching rate lower than that of a material of a free layer of the magneto-sensitive portion; and forming an MR effect multilayer by applying ion beam etching to the MR effect multilayer film by using a resist pattern as a mask in such a manner that an end point of the ion beam etching is below an upper surface of the lower electrode layer.

Abstract: Aspects include readers for magnetic storage media. Each reader is operable to read multiple tracks from the storage media simultaneously by using a plurality of active regions, each active region for reading a different track. The active regions may be disposed in rows of columns, and between rows, each active region in a row may be separated from other active regions in that row to prevent interference between those active regions. Active regions of different rows may be offset from each other such that no active region overlaps with another active region over the same data track. Active regions may share shielding and/or sense current conductors. Active regions may comprise AMR, CIP GMR, CPP GMR, including spin valve and tunneling varieties of flux sensors. Multiple active regions in a row may be defined from a single MR element by spaced apart voltage tabs. Readers may be integrally fabricated in layers.

Abstract: A lower shield layer is formed by being embedded in a first recess formed in an under layer. Accordingly, the distance between the lower shield layer and a slider can be reduced. Also, a second metal layer is formed from above a gap layer covering an electrode extracting layer over above the under layer hindwards therefrom. Accordingly, the second metal layer can be brought closer to the slider side than an upper shield layer. Consequently, the thermal dissipation effects of the thin-film magnetic head can be improved.

Abstract: A magnetic reader of the present invention comprises an MR sensor shielded by a magnetic shield including single domain soft magnetic materials. The domain wall free magnetic shield includes an unbiased soft magnetic layer and a biased soft magnetic layer separated by a non-magnetic layer. The easy axis of the biased layer is oriented to create a path for magnetic flux through the biased and unbiased layers thereby reducing the demagnetization field of the shield. A biasing layer maintains the first and second magnetic layers as single domain magnets. The biasing layer is further shaped to define a quiet zone where the biasing layer does not overlay the MR sensor.

Abstract: A read sensor stabilized by bidirectional anisotropy is disclosed. The read sensor includes a longitudinal flux-closure structure comprising an antiferromagnetic pinning layer, a ferromagnetic bias layer, a nonmagnetic spacer layer, and a ferromagnetic sense layer. In this longitudinal flux-closure structure, the antiferromagnetic pinning layer directly couples to the ferromagnetic bias layer inducing strong unidirectional anisotropy, and also indirectly couples to the ferromagnetic sense layer inducing weak unidirectional anisotropy. In addition, the ferromagnetic bias layer antiparallel-couples to the ferromagnetic sense layer across the nonmagnetic spacer layer inducing optimal bidirectional anisotropy. The magnetization of the ferromagnetic bias layer thus remains rigidly pinned mainly due to the strong unidirectional anisotropy, while the magnetization of the ferromagnetic sense layer can rotate freely and stably due to the optimal bidirectional anisotropy.

Abstract: A current perpendicular to plane (CPP) magnetoresistive sensor having an in-stack bias structure that is pinned by an AFM layer located behind the back edge (stripe height) of the sensor stack. A magnetic coupling layer is exchange coupled to the in-stack bias structure and extends beyond the back edge of the sensor stack where it is pinned by the AFM layer. The magnetic coupling layer may be either directly exchange coupled with the AFM layer or exchange coupled with an intermediate magnetic layer that is itself exchange coupled with the AFM layer. The AFM layer is located entirely beyond the stripe height of the sensor stack and between top and bottom elevations as defined by the top and bottom of the sensor stack. In this way, the AFM can pin the biasing structure without consuming any gap budget.
