  • Patent number: 7365930
Abstract: Formation of wear powder caused by wear of a ramp which is attributable to mutual contact of a lift tab and the ramp is to be reduced in loading and unloading operations. In one embodiment, a spindle motor is turned on by application of power, then the temperature of a ramp is measured and it is determined whether the temperature of the ramp has reached a preset temperature (about 25° C.) or not. If the answer is negative, a heater is energized to heat the ramp for raising the temperature of the ramp. When it is detected that the temperature of the ramp has reached the preset temperature, the heating of the ramp is stopped and the execution of loading and unloading operations is permitted, then an ordinary processing is started.

  • Patent number: 7365931
Abstract: A method of detecting a gap between a head and a recording medium in an information-recording/reproducing apparatus that uses the head to record and reproduce information in and from the recording medium. In the method, the gap between the head and the recording medium is alternately increased and decreased, thereby gradually reducing the gap between the head and the recording medium. A detection signal is detected from which to determine a contact between the head or a slider supporting the head and the recording medium. When it is determined that the head or the slider has contacted the recording medium, the head is stopped and moved away from the recording medium to a prescribed position, and data representing a distance the head has moved to contact the recoding medium is acquired.

  • Patent number: 7365932
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising an actuator arm, a head attached to a distal end of the actuator arm, a voice coil motor for rotating the actuator arm about a pivot, and an optical sensor operable to generate a first position signal representing a position of the actuator arm with respect to the disk, wherein the first position signal is substantially unaffected by a vibration mode of the actuator arm. Servo sectors recorded on the disk are processed to generate a second position signal representing a position of the head with respect to the disk, wherein the second position signal comprises a significant component due to the vibration mode of the actuator arm. A control signal is applied to the voice coil motor in response to the first and second position signals.

  • Patent number: 7365933
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide optimum servo patterns for perpendicular magnetic recording method. In one embodiment, a burst field of servo patterns is composed of burst-signal parts in each of which a constant frequency occurs successively and zero-signal parts each of which has been demagnetized to a state of zero-magnetization, and the total magnetization of the burst field is made approximately 0. The zero signal portions are formed by shutting off a write current at a time during an operation to record servo patterns on a disk initialized to a state of zero-magnetization. The total magnetization of all servo patterns is made approximately 0 by encoding an address mark field and a track code field of servo patterns by a phase shift method.

  • Patent number: 7365939
Abstract: An ionic liquid is utilized as the dynamic-pressure fluid charged inside a bearing space formed in the gap where an axial bushing (axial component) [21] and a bearing sleeve (bearing component) [13] oppose. Designing a dynamic-pressure bearing device is made possible virtually without having to consider such factors as how to control dynamic-pressure-fluid evaporation or how to secure electrical continuity between the axial bushing and the bearing sleeve. Owing to ionic liquids' property of not hydrolyzing, deterioration of the dynamic-pressure fluid from moisture absorption, oxidation, etc. is inhibited, yielding a dynamic-pressure bearing device with a long lifespan.

  • Patent number: 7365948
Abstract: An exchange-coupled film includes a seed layer, an antiferromagnetic layer, and a ferromagnetic layer. The seed layer is formed at a thickness that is larger than the critical thickness, and the thickness of the seed layer is then decreased by etching so as to be smaller than or equal to the critical thickness. Thereby, a crystalline phase which extends through the seed layer from the upper surface to the lower surface can be formed, and/or the average size, in a direction parallel to the layer surface, of the crystal grains in the seed layer can be set to be larger than the thickness of the seed layer. Consequently, a large exchange coupling magnetic field Hex can be generated between the antiferromagnetic layer and the ferromagnetic layer.

Abstract: An electronic device has an operating panel. A through-hole penetrating the operating panel is provided at a part of the operating panel. A partition board includes a board part and a partition part, and a step is provided between the board part and the partition part. In an area where the through-hole and the board part of the partition board are to be formed, a metal mold can be thickened. In an area where a narrow gap on a surface side of the operating panel is to be formed, the length of the metal mold can be reduced. Therefore, the strength of the metal mold can be maintained. Also, the step of the partition board, which separates the board part and the partition part, prevents visual recognition of the through-hole by a user.

Abstract: Air in the first section is allowed to run into a second section through first and second air vents in an electronic apparatus. This causes an increase in the amount of airflow in the first section. In particular, if the pressure loss is larger in the first section, airflow blocked in the first section is forced to run into the second section. A smooth airflow can be established in the first section. Moreover, if the pressure in the first section is set larger than the pressure in the second section, a smoother airflow is established from the first section to the second section. A further superior airflow can be established in the first section.
