  • Patent number: 7366134
Abstract: In a multiple-user network communication system such as a satellite-based system, or in cable or wireless systems, the system resources, such as bandwidth, code allocation, and or slot timing, are allocated to users based in part on their class of service. The allocation provides for immediate allocation of the requested resources to a user having a verified high class of service so long as the resources are abatable or can be made available by tapping a resource reserve. If only a portion of the requested resources are available, they are made available immediately. From time to time, the resources available to at least one class of service are allocated among the users of that class of service, either equally, equally up to the requested resources, equitably, or in some systematic manner.

  • Patent number: 7366136
Abstract: Duration based accounting for a packet data service, for example offered as a prepaid mobile IP (MIP) service through a public mobile wireless communication network, uses last detected user activity to determine the end of each session for accounting purposes. The accounting policy or algorithm defines user activity so as to include receipt of signaling related to the MIP session, such as signaling related to a termination by the user or the user's mobile station, in addition to packet data routed for the mobile station. If a session ends due to a network termination, e.g. binding expires or the network disconnects upon prepaid quota exhaustion, then the last user activity used for accounting purposes is the last data packet communication to/from the mobile station or the last received MIP session-related signaling message. For example, if MIP signaling terminates the session, then the session duration runs until receipt of that signaling.

  • Patent number: 7366147
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for enhancing Mobile IP (MIP) signaling and to support the use of a novel proxy Co-located Care-of Address (PCCoA) are described. The enhanced MIP signaling adds the ability for the Mobile Node (MN) to acquire a MN specific Foreign Agent (FA) CoA that provides the MN with a topologically correct local address yet whose tunnel encapsulation/decapsulation is provided by the FA. This address is called a proxy CCoA (PCCoA) and the associated processing in the MN and FA is called Proxy CCoA tunneling. This capability is applicable to any access technology but is especially useful for wireless systems where the access bandwidth is expensive and when point-to-point link-layer connectivity exists between the MN and the FA. A method is supported for reverse tunneling and smooth hand-off extensions based on the PCCoA that enables inter-FA forwarding even for CCoAs.

Abstract: An input line interface device that is used to accommodate packets from a high-speed line efficiently and to reduce a processing load on a back stage caused by routing control. A packet allotting section divides a variable-length packet, allots divided packets to parallel lines, and outputs the packets. A flow group classifying section classifies the packets into flow groups on each of the parallel lines. A sequence number giving section gives the packets sequence numbers corresponding to or independent of the flow groups. A buffering section stores the packets to which the sequence numbers have been given in a buffer or reads out them from the buffer to exercise sequence control over the packets in the flow groups. A flow separating switch separates the packets according to the flow groups and outputs the packets.

Abstract: A router for interconnecting N interfacing peripheral devices. The router comprises routing nodes coupled to one another via switching circuitry. A first routing nodes comprises: 1) a physical medium device (PMD) module for transmitting data packets to and receiving data packets from the N interfacing peripheral devices; 2) an ingress processor for receiving incoming data packets from the PMD module; 3) an egress processor for transmitting data packets to the PMD module; and 4) a medium access control (MAC) processor for forwarding data packets from the ingress processor to the switching circuitry and forwarding data packets from the switching circuitry to the egress processor. The MAC processor determines whether a first data packet received from the ingress processor is directed to the egress processor and, if so, transfers the first data packet directly to the egress processor without forwarding the first data packet through the switching circuitry.

Abstract: The performance and ease of management of wireless communications environments is improved by a mechanism that enables access points (APs) to perform automatic channel selection. A wireless network can therefore include multiple APs, each of which will automatically choose a channel such that channel usage is optimized. Furthermore, APs can perform automatic power adjustment so that multiple APs can operate on the same channel while minimizing interference with each other. Wireless stations are load balanced across APs so that user bandwidth is optimized. A movement detection scheme provides seamless roaming of stations between APs.

Abstract: A network switch for switching packets from a source to a destination includes a source port for receiving an incoming packet from a source, a destination port which contains a path to a destination for the packet, and a filter unit for constructing and applying a filter to selected fields of the incoming packet. The filter unit further includes filtering logic for selecting desired fields of the incoming packet and copying selected field information therefrom. The filtering logic also constructs a field value based upon the selected fields, and applies a plurality stored field masks on the field value. The switch additionally includes a rules table which contains a plurality of rules therein. The filtering logic is configured to perform lookups of the rules table in order to determine actions which must be taken based upon the result of a comparison between the field value and the stored filter masks and the rules table lookup.

  • Patent number: 7366172
Abstract: A system and method for correcting errors and losses occurring during a receiver-driven layered multicast (RLM) of real-time media over a heterogeneous packet network such as the Internet. This is accomplished by augmenting RLM with one or more layers of error correction information. This allows each receiver to separately optimize the quality of received audio and video information by subscribing to at least one error correction layer. Ideally, each source layer in a RLM would have one or more multicasted error correction data streams (i.e., layers) associated therewith. Each of the error correction layers would contain information that can be used to replace lost packets from the associated source layer. More than one error correction layer is proposed as some of the error correction packets contained in the data stream needed to replace the packets lost in the associated source stream may themselves be lost in transmission.

  • Patent number: 7366173
Abstract: A switching apparatus distributes incoming calls to end point terminals that belong to a service group and that interact with the switching apparatus via messages. The messages query the end point terminals by specifying a range and asking those end point terminals that meet a criterion associated with the range to respond. By iteratively narrowing the range, for example, in a binary search fashion, one of the end point terminals is selected. In one embodiment, the range relates to fixed sequence IDs of the end point terminals and the criterion relates to whether an end point terminal is idle or not. In another embodiment, the range incorporates the idle/not idle state of the end point terminals by specifying idle time durations.

  • Patent number: 7366175
Abstract: A packet scheduler controls dispatch of packets containing constant bit rate (CBR) or real time variable bit rate (rt-VBR) at an ingress operation of multiplexing the packets into payloads of an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) bearer virtual circuit connection. Packets can be queued in one of a number of queues according to priority. The scheduler controls assembly of common part sublayer payload data units (CPS-PDU) comprising any unused octets from a previous packet partially dispatched, and whole packets in order of priority. If a holdover timer period expires before a common part sublayer payload data unit is completed, the payload of that data unit is packed with null data; and dispatched. The packet dispatch is controlled so as to match the traffic characteristics of an underlying bearer channel.

  • Patent number: 7366176
Abstract: A method to provide actual network connection routing cost for use in connection grooming is disclosed for one embodiment. A setup message is transmitted from a source network node, through one or more intermediate nodes, to a destination node. A connect message, in acknowledgement of the setup message, is transmitted from the destination node, through the one or more intermediate nodes, to the source node to establish a network connection. The connect message includes an actual routing cost field. For one embodiment, an actual routing cost field is carried in a generic application transport (GAT) information element (IE) of a PNNI CONNECT message. The actual routing cost field is updated at every node as each link is traversed from the destination node to the source node. The accumulated routing cost in the GAT IE represents the actual routing cost of the SPVC, which the source node uses for connection grooming.

  • Patent number: 7366178
Abstract: A method and apparatus for scheduling the transmission of data packets over a multihop wireless backhaul network in which delay guarantees through the network may be advantageously ensured. Illustratively, a novel packet scheduling scheme is provided which is advantageously based on an existing scheduling policy for wireline networks and for which a delay guarantee (based on the delay characteristics of the existing scheduling policy) can be advantageously ensured. In one embodiment, an even-odd link activation framework is defined for a given multihop wireless backhaul network, and an associated scheduling policy based on an arbitrary existing scheduling policy for wireline networks is derived and adopted. In such a case, the derived scheduling policy, when applied to the given multihop wireless backhaul network, advantageously ensures a worst-case delay guarantee of approximately twice that of the existing scheduling policy for wireline networks.

Abstract: A dual PHY-based integrated access device (IAD) platform employs a highly integrated time division multiplexed (TDM), a synchronous transfer mode (ATM) cell based architecture, to provide enhanced interfacing flexibility for multiple and diverse signaling protocols, effectively reducing the cost and constraints as to choice of host processor used in conventional digital signal processor (DSP)-based IADs. With the signaling transport speed of the dual PHY based path being an order of magnitude greater than that of any of the plurality of communication paths with which the IAD is interfaced, the IAD of the invention provides effectively real time support for different communication requirements, including TDM, ATM, HDLC, and the like.
