Abstract: A system and method for performing a handover of a mobile station (MS) by considering Quality of Service (QoS) in a broadband mobile communication system. The method can include the steps of: receiving information about one or more neighbor base stations and reception strengths for the neighbor base stations from a Serving Radio Access System (RAS) currently communicating with the MS; extracting a value of a specific field from the received information about the neighbor base stations; combining the extracted value of the specific field with the reception strengths to thereby obtain combined values, and selecting a maximum value among the combined values; and transmitting a handover (handoff) request message to a base station corresponding to the selected maximum value. The system includes an MS that analyzes information about neighbor stations received in a Mobile Neighbor Base-station Advertisement (MOB_NBR_ADV) message to select a target RAS.

Abstract: A packet data load generator (PDLG) system, and method for testing the PDLG system, includes a Linux-based computer terminal having multiple 1x-EVDO wireless interface cards, e.g., Sierra Wireless AirCards®, directly interfaced therewith. PCI-to-PCMCIA adapter cards are used for connecting the wireless cards to the terminal. The terminal also includes a Linux control program for controlling the multiple wireless cards on a single terminal. In operation, the wireless interface cards are controlled to establish multiple simultaneous 1x-EVDO calls between the terminal and a 1x-EVDO wireless network, e.g., each wireless interface card supports one call with the network. Packet data is transferred between the terminal and the network, in effect simulating a multiple 1x-EVDO call load on the network. PDLG software in place on the network is monitored and/or tested. Multiple similarly configured terminals may be provided for a large number of 1x-EVDO calls, e.g., 40-50, in a laboratory setting.

Abstract: A base station for controlling transmission power during the establishment of a communication channel utilizes the reception of a short code during initial power ramp-up. The short code is a sequence for detection by the base station which has a much shorter period than a conventional access code. The ramp-up starts from a power level that is lower than the required power level for detection by the base station. The power of the short code is quickly increased until the signal is detected by the base station. Once the base station detects the short code, it transmits an indication that the short code has been detected.

An amplitude of a detected signal of the time code is sampled with respect to a seconds synchronization point in a unit period. Then, correlation values F1, F0 and FP for the data pulses “P”, “1” and “0”, respectively, are calculated based on the sampled values. Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes a mesh point receiving mesh advertisement messages from advertising mesh points of a wireless mesh network having a mesh portal with a wired connection to a wired network. Each mesh advertisement message specifies a corresponding metric for reaching the mesh portal and has a corresponding signal strength indicator. An ordered group of parent access points, ordered based on the respective metrics, is generated from among the advertising mesh points, starting with a first parent access point having a corresponding optimum metric for reaching the mesh portal and independent of the corresponding signal strength indicator. A registration message is sent to each of the parent access points identifying a corresponding specified priority based on a corresponding position in the ordered group, for use by the corresponding parent access point in selecting a minimum interframe spacing for forwarding a wireless packet received from the mesh point.

Abstract: The present invention provides a technique for determining which nodes are to provide various functions on traffic along a particular communication path. Generally, a communication path may include multiple nodes between which and through which traffic is routed. These nodes may include the communication terminals at either end of the communication path, as well as various types of routing nodes along the communication path. Each node will send to other nodes in the communication path information identifying the local functions it is capable of providing to the traffic carried in the communication path, and if available, remote functions capable of being provided to the traffic by other nodes in the communication path. Each node will receive from other nodes in the communication path information bearing on the remote functions. Each node will access criteria to determine whether any local functions should be applied to the traffic.

Abstract: A system and method for providing media-level redundancy in voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) systems are disclosed. A central controller receives VoIP calls including a media transmission and call setup data and a standby allocation module included in the central controller transmits the VoIP calls to an active card and a standby card. The active card processes the media transmission of the VoIP call using an array of signal processing modules. The VoIP call setup data is also transmitted to a standby card which stores the call setup data and data identifying the active card processing the VoIP transmission in a profile database. When an active card malfunctions, the central controller transmits an activation signal to the standby card which then loads the contents of the profile database into an array of signal processing modules on the standby card to process the VoIP calls previously processed by the malfunctioning active card.

Abstract: In a method, system and apparatus for providing rules-based restriction of incoming calls, a network entity such as a call manager receives a call request from a caller to setup a call to the client. The call manager includes a database including a client profile for the client, the client profile including identification data for the client and one or more client-defined conditions for accepting calls. The call manager also includes a processor coupled to the database that is configured to: query the database to obtain the client profile for the client in response to the call request received from the caller; determine if the call request from the caller satisfies the one or more client-defined conditions; and reject the call request if the call request is determined not to satisfy the one or more client-defined conditions.
