Abstract: The present invention relates to a closure for clamping shoelaces of shoes in place, having a clamping device, by means of which the shoelaces (18, 20) can be fixed in place, and which is arranged in a housing (312) forming a chamber for receiving the ends of the shoelaces (18, 20). For creating a shoelace closure, which prevents the ends of the shoelaces from dangling loosely, the shoelaces (18, 20) can be introduced through at least one opening (320, 322) into the chamber, and the clamping device is embodied in the chamber, where at least one clamping face is immovably maintained on the housing (312). A cover (316), closing off the chamber, is movable between an open position, in which the clamping device and the ends of the shoelaces are easily accessible, and a closed position, in which the chamber, along with the ends of the shoelaces located therein, is closed.

Abstract: A MEMS hysteretic thermal device may be formed having two passive beam segments driven by a current-carrying loop coupled to the surface of a substrate. The first beam segment is configured to move in a direction having a component perpendicular to the substrate surface, whereas the second beam segment is configured to move in a direction having a component parallel to the substrate surface. By providing this two-dimensional motion, a single MEMS hysteretic thermal device may by used to close a switch having at least one stationary contact affixed to the substrate surface.

Abstract: A set of bolt holes through which bolts are inserted are formed in left and right sides of a large end section. The bolt holes are substantially parallel to the axis of a rod section and are located such that the centers of the bolt holes are each displaced from the center of a cut surface. When a first mandrel and a second mandrel are press fitted to a joint hole of the large end section and are cut and split, the area of contact of the second mandrel on the movable stage side with the inner wall of the joint hole is set greater than the area of contact of the first mandrel on the fixed stage side with the inner wall of the joint hole.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for making a mesh reflector that may be used to produce a shaped reflector is provided. The mesh reflector may be an umbrella-style deployable mesh reflector capable of approximating both parabolic and arbitrarily shaped reflecting surfaces, including those with regions of reversed curvature. The reflecting surface may be provided by a soft mesh attached to a highly pre-tensioned net composed of two sets of substantially parallel chords forming a plurality of parallelogram-shaped facets. The net/mesh may be made to conform to the desired shape by pulling and/or pushing on it at each of its facet corners via a set of finely adjustable tension ties and/or compression rods, the distal ends of which react against a set of pre-tensioned catenary-shaped chords disposed on the aft side of the mesh.

Abstract: A method of joining a multiple member work-piece includes stacking the members of the work-piece on a die such that a first of the members rests on the die. Next, a rivet is driven into the second member until the rivet penetrates the members and deforms. The rivet is then welded to the first member to strengthen the riveted joint. Different mechanisms may be used to accomplish the welding. For example, a laser beam may be directed through a passage in the first die to target the area of the riveted joint to be welded. Alternatively, the die set, rivet, and first member may be arranged to form an electrical circuit that welds the joint via resistance heating. An assembly of a multiple member work-piece and a rivet made according to the method is also provided.
