Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of inerters such as those used in vehicle suspension systems to control or counteract dynamic spring forces. The present invention arises from a surprising discovery, based on lab testing of another hydraulic suspension device, that the inertia of the fluid in a feed line has a very significant inertia effect, magnified by the ratio of the piston diameter to the line diameter to the 4th power. As a consequence, sufficient inertial reaction may be provided by the inertance of fluid alone and in the absence of a mechanical flywheel arrangement. Thus according to one aspect of the invention, there is provided an inerter (10, 110) which comprises first and second mechanical terminals (11, 12, 116, 140) which are arranged to be movable, one relative to the other, subject to an inertial reaction, wherein at least a portion of the inertial reaction is provided by hydraulic fluid inertance means (36, 152).

Abstract: A wet friction member contains a pulverized cork heated to 150-200° C. if necessary. The pulverized cork is mixed with other papermaking materials and formed into a paper-made substrate. The paper-made substrate is impregnated with a synthetic resin to be a binder and heated and cured. The cork itself has a high friction coefficient ?. Moreover, a powder thereof increases surface area and area in contact with a separator plate of a counter member, thereby improving a friction coefficient of a friction surface of the wet friction member. The friction coefficient of the cork itself and capacities for absorbing and discharging oil are improved by heating the cork. Thus, there is provided a wet friction member that has a higher friction coefficient ?. An increase in the friction coefficient ?, weight reduction by reducing the number of friction members, and high efficiency are achieved when used as a wet friction member.

Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a MEMS device in which silicon residues from the adhesion promoter material are reduced or even eliminated from the cavity floor. The adhesion promoter is typically used to adhere sacrificial material to material above the substrate. The adhesion promoter is the removed along with then sacrificial material. However, the adhesion promoter leaves silicon based residues within the cavity upon removal. The inventors have discovered that the adhesion promoter can be removed from the cavity area prior to depositing the sacrificial material. The adhesion promoter which remains over the remainder of the substrate is sufficient to adhere the sacrificial material to the substrate without fear of the sacrificial material delaminating. Because no adhesion promoter is used in the cavity area of the device, no silicon residues will be present within the cavity after the switching element of the MEMS device is freed.

Abstract: Provided is a Ni alloy sputtering target containing Pt in an amount of 5 to 30 at %, and one or more components selected from V, Al, Cr, Ti, Mo, and Si in a total amount of 1 to 5 at %, wherein the remainder is Ni and unavoidable impurities. The present invention is able to increase the low pass-through flux (PTF), which is a drawback of a Ni—Pt alloy having high magnetic permeability, increase the erosion area of the target which tends to be small as a result of the magnetic field lines being locally concentrated on the surface of the target during sputtering, and inhibit the difference between the portion where erosion is selectively advanced and the portion where erosion does not advance as much as the erosion progresses.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for smelting has a smelting pot for containing electrolyte, alumina and a layer of liquid aluminum. A wall in the form of one or more TiB2 or alumina plates extends from the bottom of the pot to a height exceeding the height of the liquid aluminum layer formed in the bottom of the smelting pot during smelting. The wall partitions the bottom of the pot and impedes movement of the aluminum under the influence of MHD forces, diminishing the maximum crest height of waves in the aluminum and allowing a reduction in the ACD to reduce electrical resistance and power consumption. The wall may equal or exceed the height of the anode and may, when conductive, act as a cathode, drawing a horizontal current. The wall may be composed of alumina, e.g., in the form of blocks, undergoing electrolytic reduction and being replaced periodically.

Abstract: Molten metal is continuously produced by electrolysis of a molten electrolyte which is denser than the metal in an electrolytic multipolar cell characterized by a high and stable current efficiency. Molten metal droplets are separated from the circulating electrolyte along a set of horizontal channels of gravity settlers disposed between the electrolysis chamber and the metal collecting chamber. Thereafter the metal rises to and floats on the surface of the electrolyte in the metal collection chamber, is conveyed to a metal collecting reservoir immersed in the electrolyte and periodically removed to maintain the cell in continuous operation. The coalescence of the metal droplets is enhanced by sealing the cell to prevent ingress of air into the chlorine room and into the front compartment.
