Abstract: In a traditional hybrid air engine it is complicated to adjust valve timing to compensate for different engine operating modes. Provided is an air compression method and apparatus. The air compression method can be carried out in a single stage with a plurality of air tanks (61, 63) coupled to a compressor (51). The compressor (51) may be a cylinder Air is added to the compressor (51) at atmospheric pressure. Pressurized air is then added to the compressor (51) from a low pressure air tank (61). The compressor (51) compresses the air and transfers a portion of it to a high pressure air tank (63). The remaining portion of the compressed air is transferred to the low pressure air tank (61) for use in the next compression cycle A cam shaft (27) having a two stroke cam (93) and a four stroke cam (95) for each intake valve (59) and exhaust valve (55, 57) is provided to control valve timing during different operating modes.

Abstract: A method for adapting stiffness in a variable stiffness actuator includes a member configured to transmit motion that is connected to a fluidic circuit, into which a control fluid circulates. The fluidic circuit includes a supply and distribution unit of the control fluid having a reservoir of the control fluid and a pumping unit. The supply and distribution unit includes two distribution lines of the control fluid, which are fluidly connected to the actuator such that an increase and/or decrease in the pressure of the control fluid activates the member that transmits motion. The stiffness of the actuator is adapted by adapting the pressure of the control fluid into the two distribution lines. The present invention includes also a variable stiffness actuator utilizing the above method for adapting stiffness.

Abstract: A compressed-air energy storage system according to embodiments of the present invention comprises a reversible mechanism to compress and expand air, one or more compressed air storage tanks, a control system, one or more heat exchangers, and, in certain embodiments of the invention, a motor-generator. The reversible air compressor-expander uses mechanical power to compress air (when it is acting as a compressor) and converts the energy stored in compressed air to mechanical power (when it is acting as an expander). In certain embodiments, the compressor-expander comprises one or more stages, each stage consisting of pressure vessel (the “pressure cell”) partially filled with water or other liquid. In some embodiments, the pressure vessel communicates with one or more cylinder devices to exchange air and liquid with the cylinder chamber(s) thereof. Suitable valving allows air to enter and leave the pressure cell and cylinder device, if present, under electronic control.

Abstract: In open-circuit hydraulic systems (1), the cross-sections of the supply lines (6) and input valves of the hydraulic pump (3) have to be large, so that sufficient flow flux can be provided. This hinders a reduction of the size of the pump and the whole hydraulic system. It is suggested that the supply flow (7) of a hydraulic pump (3) is charged by a second, charging pump (2), to a mid-pressure level (7). The cross-sections of the supply flow areas can thus be decreased.

The ECU includes a control portion that commences an engine-starting drive of the starter within a phase interval, during which the torque of the Stirling engine that varies according to phase of the output shaft is relatively small. The phase interval is an interval during which the torque of the Stirling engine is less than or equal to the torque obtained when the compression begins. The phase at which the driving of the starter is commenced is set to the phase at which the torque of the Stirling engine becomes smaller than the torque obtained when the compression begins.

Abstract: “A lubrication system for turbocharger(s) ensures continuous lubrication of bearings and shaft of the turbocharger with lubricant retention during start and shut down of turbocharger-associated systems thereby enhancing the performance and turbocharger life. A shaft and bearings are lubricated by introducing pressurized lubricating oil through an oil inlet passage in the bearing housing and after lubricating, the lubricant returns to the engine oil sump located below the turbocharger through the oil outlet passage. A valve in the oil inlet pipe line permits lubricant flow to the bearings during engine running, and when the engine stops and oil pressure falls below the valve opening pressure, the valve shuts and traps the lubricant in oil inlet pipe that is above the valve. The oil outlet pipe retains sufficient lubricant in the bearing housing which lubricates the shaft and bearings post engine shutdown.
