Abstract: Disclosed is a system and method suitable for calibrating a phased array system configured to inspect square bars. A square bar is provided with an array of parallel linear notches across the full range of the testing surface of the square bar for this calibrating purpose. The square bar is passed through the probe in probe's passive direction during the calibration. The phased array system is adjusted and calibrated so that the echo amplitude for each inspection channel of the phased array probe received from each notch is substantially equal. Then a known flaw with a typically expected flaw's size and shape is created on the same testing surface so that the system's sensitivity is adjusted using the amplitude of the echo signal from the known flaw as a baseline.

Abstract: In representative embodiments, a system includes an acoustic emitter, a controller, an optical sensor, and an indicator for indicating a detection of a predetermined trace chemical vapor by the optical sensor. The acoustic emitter is positioned at a predetermined distance above the ground surface and configured to project a beam of acoustic energy toward the ground surface with a variable angle of incidence ?. The controller is configured to control the acoustic emitter to vary the angle of incidence of the acoustic beam within the variable angle of incidence ?, while the optical sensor is configured for standoff sensing of a trace chemical vapor proximate the ground surface. Excitation of the ground surface, particularly at a critical angle of incidence ?, causes the release of trace chemical vapors from a buried source and the soil into the air above the buried source.

Abstract: A device for measuring a particulate concentration in motor vehicle exhaust gases, has a measuring chamber, which is able to be filled up with a gas-particulate mixture that is to be measured, at least one light source and at least one light sensor. The light sensor detects light that has been scattered by particulates present in the gas-particulate mixture. An exhaust gas supply device is developed to supply exhaust gas, that is to be measured, to the measuring chamber. A null gas low in particulates is able to be supplied from a null gas source to the measuring chamber. A switching element, which is situated between the exhaust gas supply device and the measuring chamber, is suitable for admitting or forestalling the supply of exhaust gas into the measuring chamber on an optional basis.

Abstract: A system for testing a rail car brake system includes a valve manifold having valves that selectively supply and vent test air to or from the brake system. A control circuit is operatively connected with the valve manifold and configured to operate in a first mode to automatically position the valves according to a prescribed test and to operate in a second mode to allow manual positioning of the valves. A method for testing a rail car brake system includes connecting test air to a valve manifold, connecting the valve manifold to the brake system, and testing the brake system using a control circuit configured to automatically position valves in the valve manifold according to a prescribed test. The method further detects a failed test result in the brake system and troubleshoots the brake system using the control circuit to manually position valves in the valve manifold.
