Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for separating metal values, such as nickel and nickel compounds, from mineral ores, including lateritic ores are disclosed. The method includes providing a mixture of particles (e.g., crushed and sized ore) that is composed of at least a first group of particles and a second group of particles. Group members have similar chemical composition, while particles belonging to different groups have dissimilar chemical compositions. The mixture of particles is concurrently, or generally concurrently, heated (using microwave/millimeter wave energy) and exposed to a reactant. The wave energy and the reactant act to increase the difference in either the magnetic susceptibility or other separation properties between the first and second group of particles. The mixture of particles is then passed through an appropriate separator to separate the particles of interest. Optional steps are disclosed for purifying selected particles.

Abstract: An apparatus for treating water stored in a reservoir to remove contaminants has a feed line for receiving water and a by-pass valve that controls the flow of water through the feed line. A venturi valve responds to the rate of flow of water through a flow line by creating a vacuum in a supply line from an ozone generator, the extent of the vacuum created being dependent on the rate of flow, to add ozone at a controlled rate to the water to be treated. A sensor probe measures the oxidation reduction potential of the water, to supply hydrogen peroxide to the water at a controlled rate dependent on the oxidation reduction potential level. The ozone and the hydrogen peroxide are mixed with the water in a multicyclone unit to allow a peroxone reaction to occur that treats the water, and the treated water is returned to the reservoir.

Each embodiment includes a series of vents, purge ports, and passages that communicate fluidly with the filter housing and filter core. Certain vents and purge ports are initially opened following filtration operations to allow pressurized gas to flow into the housing, thereby forcing residual unfiltered liquid through the filter. When this has been accomplished, another vent is opened to the filter core to allow filtered liquid to flow from the downstream or outlet passage from the filter core. Some embodiments have the filter outlet located above the filter, and include a downstream drain port extending from the filter core. Abstract: Method and system for extracting and recovering hydrocarbons from wastewater and treating the water to improve its condition. A series of specific unit operations result in the extraction of hydrocarbons, solids and contaminants and the treatment of water to a condition which is fit for re-use or environmentally sustainable discharge. Phase separation between the water and hydrocarbons is effected using flotation techniques followed by collection of the hydrocarbons using a movable collection surface. The aqueous phase is processed by multiple filtration steps. The result is significant extraction and recovery of hydrocarbons and conservation of water for re-use or discharge to the environment in a process which is continuous and scalable for large or small operations.

Abstract: An apparatus and methods for measuring the concentration of an additive are disclosed. The apparatus comprises a treatment stream (1) and a dosing stream (2). An additive is added to the dosing stream using a metering device (3). In some embodiments, the dosing stream is mixed after adding the additive using a first mixing device (4). Downstream from the metering device and the mixing device, the concentration of the additive in the dosing stream is measured using a monitor flow cell (5). In some embodiments, the dosing stream and treatment stream are combined (6) and mixed using a second mixing device (7). The concentration of the additive in the treatment stream can be calculated as a function of the volumetric flow rate ratio of the dosing stream to the treatment stream and the measured concentration of the additive in the dosing stream.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate to a filtration device and method for filtering liquids. In conventional devices, a liquid is placed in a vial, and a plunger, having a filter membrane located at one end, is depressed into the vial, causing the liquid to pass through the filter membrane into the interior of the plunger, where it is stored until required for further processing. However, such plungers are typically made of a plastics material. It is undesirable to store the filtered liquid in contact with plastics for extended periods of time, as contaminants may leach from the plastics material into the sample. In embodiments of the present invention, a filtrate receptacle made from a different material to the plunger, such as a glass material, is located in the interior of the plunger and the filtered liquid collected in the filtrate receptacle after passing through the filter membrane.
