Abstract: Disclosed are a single crystal wire and other single crystal articles, and a manufacturing method thereof. The method comprises the steps of: placing into a growth crucible at least one metal selected from the group consisting of gold, copper, silver, aluminum and nickel; heating and melting the metal placed in the growth crucible; growing a single crystal using metal crystal as a seed by Czochralski or Bridgman method; cutting the grown single crystal by electric discharge machining; and machining the cut single crystal and producing a wire or other articles such as a ring. In the method, the grown metal single crystal is cut into a disc-shaped piece by electric discharge machining. The piece is transformed into a single crystal wire or other articles by wire-cut electric discharge machining, and the single crystal wire can be used as a ring, a pendant, or a wire for high-quality cables for audio and video systems.

  • Patent number: 8663389
Abstract: A method and apparatus for depositing III-V material is provided. The apparatus includes a reactor partially enclosed by a selectively permeable membrane 12. A means is provided for generating source vapors, such as a vapor-phase halide of a group III element (IUPAC group 13) within the reactor volume 10, and an additional means is also provided for introducing a vapor-phase hydride of a group V element (IUPAC group 15) into the volume 10. The reaction of the group III halide and the group V hydride on a temperature-controlled substrate 18 within the reactor volume 10 produces crystalline III-V material and hydrogen gas. The hydrogen is preferentially removed from the reactor through the selectively permeable membrane 12, thus avoiding pressure buildup and reaction imbalance. Other gases within the reactor are unable to pass through the selectively permeable membrane.

  • Patent number: 8663392
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention overcome the well-known recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass in an economically viable manner. A process and a system are provided for the efficient fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass into cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The cellulose and hemicellulose thus obtained are highly amorphous and can be readily converted into highly concentrated mixtures of five and six carbon sugars using known methods. Typical yields of sugars exceed 100 grams of sugars per liter of sugar solution. Other products, such as alcohols, can easily be prepared according to methods of the invention. The modest process conditions and low solvent/solid ratios of some embodiments of the invention require relatively low capital and processing costs.
