    Abstract: A modular package may be utilized to mount an RF system-on-chip in one of plural configurations, such that the same modular package may be utilized to enable plural device formats, while reducing the amount of RF testing needed to change device formats. In one configuration, a surface mount device is mounted onto a first surface of a board, and the board is directly surface mounted onto a base board. Here, the base board includes a hole for accommodating the surface mount device, providing a thin device format. In a second configuration, a spacer is mounted onto the first surface of the board, such that a gap is provided between the board and the base board for accommodating the surface mount device, providing a relatively thicker device, but providing additional surface area where the hole otherwise would be, reducing the device size.

    Abstract: A flyback converter involves a bipolar transistor (BJT) and a parallel-connected diode as the rectifying element in the secondary side of the converter. The transformer of the converter has a primary winding, a first secondary winding, and a second secondary winding. A first end of the first secondary winding is coupled to the BJT base. A first end of the second secondary winding is coupled to the BJT collector and to the anode of the diode. The first and second secondary windings are wound such that when primary winding current stops, pulses of current flow out of the first ends of the first and second secondary windings. These currents are such that the BJT is maintained in saturation throughout at least most of the time current flows through the rectifying element, thereby achieving a low forward voltage across the rectifying element, reducing conduction loss, and increasing converter efficiency.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an isolated regulating power converter with opto-coupled feedback of output (Vo) with respect to a reference level (Vset) for regulation to a converter controller. The sense of the feedback signal is such that the opto-coupler LED is ON when Vo<Vset and OFF when Vo>Vset with the effect that the LED current and power loss is zero during the times when Vo>Vset, as is normal case for many controllers at low or no load. This saves power under such circumstances. Additionally, as the LED does not load the output during this time, the proportion of time for which Vo>Vset is increased, meaning that the timing at which the switch must again be on to meet demand is extended, producing a further power saving.
