A discontinuous resistor chain is disposed between the conducting chain and the gradient chain, wherein the conducting chain changes, by adjusting the cascaded length of and the gaps between the electrode elements, the conductor area to generate the trend of voltage drop, so that the conducting chain has the voltage regulating and compensating properties. Meanwhile, the gradient chain may also make the gradient chain have the voltage distributing uniformity by adjusting the lengths of and the gaps between the electrode elements, so that the electrode loop is effectively distributed around the electroconductive substrate to form the homogenized electric field effect, thereby satisfying the narrow-edge design requirement.

The borehole equipment is modelled by a computational model for computer simulation. The model has elements representing a particular mechanical and physical behavior of the borehole equipment. In a simulated stick mode of the borehole equipment, physical quantities are loaded to the elements, which quantities represent an initial state of the borehole equipment prior to a transition from stick mode to slip mode. From a simulation of such transition, a time response of rotational speeds of a drive system and bottom hole assembly of the borehole equipment is recorded and a lower limit of the rotational speed of the drive system is determined for which the rotational driven speed of the bottom hole assembly is zero.

Abstract: A rotary steerable drilling system includes a housing, a drive shaft passing through the housing, a shaft/housing locking mechanism disposed to selectively engage the drive shaft and the housing, and an anti-rotation mechanism disposed to engage a wellbore wall. Shaft/housing locking mechanism includes a first configuration in which rotation of the drive shaft is independent of the housing, and a second configuration in which rotation of the drive shaft causes rotation of the housing. Anti-rotation mechanism includes a first configuration in which the anti-rotation mechanism extends radially relative to the drive shaft, and a second configuration in which the anti-rotation mechanism retracts from engagement with the wellbore wall. A timing mechanism may be employed to transition the anti-rotation mechanism from the first configuration to the second configuration before the shaft/housing locking mechanism transitions from the first configuration to the second configuration.

Abstract: A mud saver valve (MSVIII), positionable at the bottom of the drill string, above the bit, which includes an elongated body portion; portion of the valve housing a compressible spring a pressure; a valve mechanism of a plunger and seat, the plunger moveable between open and closed positions within the valve by concentric actuator pistons; while in the closed position, drilling fluid cannot pass through the valve; when a combination of static and pump pressure exceeds the setting pressure of the spring, the plunger will be unseated by the concentric actuator pistons to the open position, at which time drilling fluid is allowed to through the valve; wherein when the valve is normally closed, as long as the fluid column pressure is less than the setting pressure, the valve remains closed, and allows the drill string to be disconnected and a section of pipe can be added without the fluid draining from the drill column above the bit, and thus saving fluid.
