Abstract: A surgical severing and stapling instrument, suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil. An E-beam firing bar moves distally through the clamped end effector to sever tissue and to drive staples on each side of the cut. The E-beam firing bar affirmatively spaces the anvil from the elongate channel to assure properly formed closed staples, especially when an amount of tissue is clamped that is inadequate to space the end effector. In particular, an upper pin of the firing bar longitudinally moves through an anvil slot and a channel slot is captured between a lower cap and a middle pin of the firing bar to assure a minimum spacing. Forming the E-beam from a thickened distal portion and a thinned proximal strip enhances manufacturability and facilitates use in such articulating surgical instruments.

Abstract: When friction-stir welding steel sheets, for the rotating tool, rotation speed RS is 100-1000 rpm, rotational torque RT 50-500 Nm, and travel speed TS 10-1000 mm/min, and HIPT (kJ/mm2) is 0.3-1.5. The steel sheets used have a composition including 0.01-0.2 mass % of C, 0.5-2.0 mass % of Mn, 0.6 mass % or less of Si, 0.030 mass % or less of P, 0.015 mass % or less of S, and 0.0060 mass % or less of 0, with a content of Ti [% Ti] and a content of N [% N] being restricted in relation to the HIPT, Ceq being 0.5 mass % or less, and the balance being Fe and incidental impurities. As a result, local change in the frictional heat and plastic flow generated by friction can be prevented, yielding a weld portion with uniform and good toughness.

Abstract: A brazing method includes fixing a padding plate on a base material such that the padding plate is arranged in a lower position from a groove formed in a repair region of the base material, and heating the base material such that a base material powder is melt, after a paste that base material 1 contains the base material powder which is formed from a same material as the base material is filled into the groove. The base material powder filled into groove can be prevented from flowing out from the groove even if being fused since the padding plate is arranged for the base material. Thus, a repair region can be repaired more appropriately.

Abstract: A vacuum carrier can be employed to provide a partial vacuum on a back side surface of a substrate thereby holding the substrate flat against a rigid surface of the carrier throughout the duration of a bonding process. The magnitude of vacuum can be optimized to limit the warping of the substrate during and after bonding with another substrate, and to limit the mechanical stress induced in the solder balls during cooling. The vacuum carrier can include a base plate, a seal plate with at least one opening configured to accommodate at least one substrate, and vacuum seal elements configured to create a vacuum environment that pushes the substrate against the base plate when the vacuum carrier is under vacuum. The configuration of the vacuum carrier is chosen to avoid distortion of the substrate due to the vacuum seal elements, while allowing adjustment of the magnitude of the partial vacuum.
