  • Patent number: 9236712
Abstract: A frequency tuneable or chirped laser device is described that includes a laser cavity formed from a plurality of optical components. The optical components include a laser source for generating a beam of light, a spectral tuning element and one or more further optical components for directing the beam of light on to the spectral tuning element. At least one of the plurality of optical components is moveable in a first degree of freedom; such movement simultaneously altering the effective optical path length of the laser cavity and the tuning frequency of the spectral tuning element. The effective optical path length and the tuning frequency of the device are substantially insensitive to any movement of said at least one moveable optical component in degrees of freedom other than the first degree of freedom. This provides frequency tuning in which mode hopping is suppressed.

  • Patent number: 9236726
Abstract: The present invention includes a method for providing ground fault protection to a generator. The method includes determining the existing state of the generator and second, determining the updated alarm or trip conditions of a relay connected to the generator in view of the existing state of the generator. This includes estimating a ratio of the magnitude of the 3rd harmonic neutral voltage to the magnitude of the 3rd harmonic terminal voltage of a generator, along with calculating the residual 3rd harmonic voltage from the estimated 3rd harmonic ratio. From this, a comparison is made between the energy of the residual voltage with a fractional energy of the 3rd harmonic neutral voltage. Based on this comparison, an alarm or trip condition is signaled when the energy of the residual voltage is greater than the fractional energy of the 3rd harmonic neutral voltage.

  • Patent number: 9236729
Abstract: Anti-arcing circuits are described herein that are configured to prevent or substantially mitigate arcing when a power adapter is connected/disconnected from a client device. The anti-arcing circuit restricts power supplied when a connection of a connector of a power adapter to the adapter interface is not fully established. The anti-arcing circuit is further configured to detect when a connection is made and remove the restriction to supply power for operations of the client device. In one approach, the anti-arcing circuit includes two different paths and components associated with a detection mode and operational mode respectively. In the detection mode, power supply is suppressed and a current pulse may be sent to determine if a connection is established. If current is detected, a switch is made to operational mode and power for normal device operations is supplied.

  • Patent number: 9236734
Abstract: The invention provides a method of forming an electric field gap device, such as a lateral field emission ESD protection structure, in which a cathode layer is formed between dielectric layers. Anode channels are formed and they are lined with a sacrificial dielectric layer. Conductive anode pillars are formed in the anode channels, and then the sacrificial dielectric layer is etched away in the vicinity of the anode pillars. The etching leaves a suspended portion of the cathode layer which defines a lateral gap to an adjacent anode pillar. This portion has a sharp end face defined by the corners of the cathode layer and the lateral gap can be defined accurately as it corresponds to the thickness of the sacrificial dielectric layer.
