Abstract: A force-sense-imparting operation device including a stationary section, a rotating section, and an operation member. One of the stationary section and the rotating section includes an excitation coil and a first magnetic pole section, and the other includes a second magnetic pole section capable of opposition to the first magnetic pole section in a specific opposing direction. The first magnetic pole section forms a magnetic circuit with the first magnetic pole section due to the second magnetic pole section being excited in a state that the second magnetic pole section opposes the first magnetic pole section. The magnetic circuit encircles a periphery of the excitation coil on the cross section, the second magnetic pole section being arranged to separate from the first magnetic pole section with rotation of the rotating section.

Abstract: In an embodiment for use with a portable device, a haptic feedback system creates a haptic pop effect and the system may include a mechanism configured to produce a haptic pop effect and a controller electronically coupled with the mechanism to selectively activate the mechanism. In one example, the mechanism has a first normal state having mechanical energy stored therein, and a second state wherein said mechanical energy is released, thereby creating the haptic pop effect. The mechanism may include a material portion configured as a dome-shaped or arcuate diaphragm and made of metal that stores mechanical energy therein. A conductor such as a Nitinol wire may be positioned about and bonded to the perimeter of the material, and has a variable length of a first length to a shorter second length in response to the signal being applied to the mechanism.

Abstract: A system for simulating materials using touch surfaces includes a touch surface, an actuator and/or an temperature control device, and a control unit. The control unit controls the actuator or the temperature control device to cause at least a portion of the touch surface to simulate a material. Such control may include utilizing the actuator to vibrate the surface to simulate the tactile sensation of texture. Such control may also include utilizing the temperature control device (such as a Peltier device) to control the temperature of the surface in order to simulate the thermal conductivity of a material. In some cases, the temperature control may be performed utilizing a temperature sensor to adjust the temperature of the surface. In various cases, the vibration and/or temperature may be varied over time, such as in response to one or more touches detected using one or more touch sensors.

Abstract: Devices, systems, and techniques for mitigating error from gesture input are disclosed. A system may receive an indication of a first gesture input, determine that the first gesture input is an indicator gesture input, and, responsive to the determination that the first gesture input is the indicator gesture input, enter a gesture control mode during which the system is configured to control one or more actions related to a medical procedure. Only during the gesture control mode, the system may receive an indication of a second gesture input associated with the medical procedure and, responsive to receiving the indication of the second gesture input, control, based on the second gesture input, at least a portion of the medical procedure. Additionally, or alternatively, the system may employ other error mitigation techniques for gesture input related to medical procedures.

Abstract: A system for recognizing various human and creature motion gaits and behaviors is presented. These behaviors are defined as combinations of “gestures” identified on various parts of a body in motion. For example, the leg gestures generated when a person runs are different than when a person walks. The system described here can identify such differences and categorize these behaviors. Gestures, as previously defined, are motions generated by humans, animals, or machines. Multiple gestures on a body (or bodies) are recognized simultaneously and used in determining behaviors. If multiple bodies are tracked by the system, then overall formations and behaviors (such as military goals) can be determined.

Abstract: The invention discloses a device and a method to control an object on a surface using motion sensor measurements and relative and absolute pointing algorithms. Relative pointing is preferred at low speeds and absolute pointing is preferred at high speeds. Transition between the results of the two algorithms has to be smoothed, using a weighted combination of the two results. The weights may be made dependent over time or over speed of the device. Maximum and minimum values of different parameters may have to be set to avoid jumps or changes in direction which may affect the user's experience negatively. The goal is that the user has consistent perceptions what he or she sees on the screen and the movements he or she imparts on the device, while still keeping the position of the object as close as possible to the position calculated by an absolute pointing algorithm.
