Publication number: 20160249931Abstract: Devices and methods for removing tissue, which causes minimal pain or scarring. A hemostatic clamp having two arms with juxtaposeablefaces, can compress tissue between the faces of the arms so as to fuse a portion of the tissue therebetween. A locking mechanism maintains pressure on the arms until the skin is fused to create a skin tab. The unwanted tissue, such as a polydactyl digit, skin tag, or the like, can be excised with the clamp in position. When the locking mechanism is disengaged and the clamp is removed, the fused skin tab inhibits bleeding and the removal of the digit encourages any remaining underlying nerves to withdraw from the area of amputation. A related device can be used as a castration clamp to externally compress testicular-related tissues, such as ductiles, nerves, and blood vessels leading to the testicles, to castrate an animal. The castration clamp provides a quick, bloodless technique that eliminates the need for open wounds, which are subject to infection.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 23, 2014Publication date: September 1, 2016Applicant: University of Florida Research Foundation, Inc.Inventors: Juan Carlos ROIG, Carlos HONDAL

Publication number: 20160249962Abstract: An orthopedic assembly is described that comprises an orthopedic device, an anchor, and a locking mechanism. The orthopedic device can be a plate member having an aperture that is configured to receive the anchor. The anchor can include a head, neck and shank portion. The head portion can include a plurality of arms separated by grooves that are capable of splaying. The assembly is configured such that when the locking mechanism is inserted into the head portion, this causes expansion of the arms of the head. This expansion locks and secures the anchor to the orthopedic device. Various instruments are provided that can deliver the locking mechanism to the anchor, and can provide impact to lock functionality.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 6, 2016Publication date: September 1, 2016Inventors: Michael Black, Jon Suh, Christopher Angelucci, Matthew Hansell

Publication number: 20160249963Abstract: A bone plate has a first frame portion with a plurality of apertures. The apertures may have central axes angled with respect to a bone contacting surface adjacent thereto at an angle of other than 90°. The plate has a second plate portion comprising a plurality of apertures therethrough and has a first end connected to the first plate portion. The plate has a third plate portion having first and second ends respectively connected to a second end of the second plate portion and to the first plate portion at a point thereon closer to a center of the first plate portion than the first end of the second plate portion to the first plate portion. The first, second and third plate portions having an arcuate shape capable of conforming to an arcuate bone surface, the bone contacting surface forming a concave portion of the arcuate shape.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 9, 2016Publication date: September 1, 2016Inventors: Pierre Guy, Henry Claude Sagi, Michael Archdeacon, Jakob Kemper, Matthias Paulisch, Andreas Petersik

Publication number: 20160249965Abstract: A driver instrument for engaging and transferring rotational torque to a bone anchor already screwed into a bony structure. The driver instrument may be advanced through an incision while disengaged from the bone anchor and thereafter engaged in a driver socket of the bone anchor. The driver instrument includes an elongate shaft extending distally from a handle, a tapered distal tip, and a driver engagement feature located proximally of the tapered distal tip. The tapered distal tip and the driver engagement feature are configured such that the longitudinal rotational axis of the driver instrument automatically moves into parallel alignment with the longitudinal rotational axis of the bone anchor as the driver engagement feature of the driver instrument is advanced into the driver socket of the bone anchor.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 6, 2016Publication date: September 1, 2016Inventor: Eric P. Publication number: 20160249967Abstract: A spinal surgery retractor and method of use. The retractor includes a slotted keyway for integrating a keyed spinal distractor. The retractor and distractor combination slide together to displace a portion of the intervertebral disk space to restore or maintain intervertebral spacing and facilitate retraction of surrounding soft tissues while disk space surgery is performed. The distractor head and mating portion of the retractors have matching profiles that enable the retractor to maintain distraction of the vertebra after removal of the distractor portion of the tool, permitting access to increase at the operating site.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 10, 2016Publication date: September 1, 2016Inventor: Marshall Ephraim Stauber

Publication number: 20160249968Abstract: Hip arthroplasty apparatus and methods are described to determine an orientation of an acetabular cup impactor, the acetabular cup impactor being moveable to a desired orientation relative to a patient's pelvic region for implantation of an acetabular cup. In one embodiment, an electronic orientation sensor is transitionable between a first location on the patient's pelvic region and a second location on the acetabular cup impactor. In a second embodiment, an image capture device is locatable on the acetabular impactor or the patient's pelvic region to capture images including markers located on the other of the patient's pelvic region or the acetabular impactor.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 14, 2014Publication date: September 1, 2016Inventors: William Lindsay WALTER, Shane McCarthy DONOHOO
