Abstract: The method for treating continuous sheet material for use in the manufacture of rod-shaped articles comprises the steps of providing a continuous sheet material comprising a crimping structure running in a longitudinal direction of the continuous sheet material. It further comprises the step of providing a first roller and a second roller, the first roller and the second roller comprising a plurality of circumferentially running cams, the circumferentially running cams of the first roller and the circumferentially running cams of the second roller engaging each other. The method further comprises the step of guiding the continuous sheet material comprising the crimping structure between the circumferentially running cams of the first roller and of the second roller. Thereby the continuous sheet material comprising the crimping structure is provided with a wavelike structure, the wave-like structure runs in a longitudinal direction of the continuous sheet material and overlays the crimping structure.

Abstract: A unidirectional elastomeric composite comprises a plurality of fibers generally aligned in a first direction with an elastomer filling the space between fibers. The plurality of fibers may comprise an intermediate modulus carbon fiber. Preferably, the plurality of fibers have an ultimate elongation at failure or tensile failure strain of 1% or greater, a tensile modulus between 200-400 GPa and tensile strength greater than 4 GPa. The resin or matrix may be a passive elastomer that will maintain its mechanical and chemical properties at a specific operational temperature range. Elastomers are polymers with viscoelasticity, generally having low Young's modulus and high failure strain. Methods of manufacturing the unidirectional elastomeric composite include apply the resin to fibers maintained in tension to maintain the fiber alignment.

Abstract: A fiber-reinforced composite material has a fabric base material including laminated obliquely-crossed fabric layers, each of which is configured by weaving first and second reinforced fiber bundles, which obliquely cross each other. In adjacent two of the fabric layers, one of an orientation of the first reinforced fiber bundles and an orientation of the second reinforced fiber bundles in one fabric layer is the same as one of an orientation of the first reinforced fiber bundles and an orientation of the second reinforced fiber bundles of the other fabric layer. A single-orientation layer is placed between the adjacent fabric layers such that an orientation of fiber bundles of the single-orientation layer is the same as an orientation of reinforced fiber bundles having the same orientation as each other in the adjacent fabric layers.
