Abstract: The present invention leverages the techniques for expansion microscopy (ExM) to provide improved high-throughput super-resolution whole-organ imaging methodology to image protein architectures over whole organs with nanoscale resolution by using high-throughput microscopes in combination with samples that have been iteratively expanded more than once, in a method referred to herein as “iterative expansion microscopy” (iExM). In the ExM method, biological samples of interest are permeated with a swellable material that results in the sample becoming embedded in the swellable material, and then the sample can be expanded isotropically in three dimensions The process of iteratively expanding the samples can be applied to samples that have been already expanded using ExM techniques one or more additional times to iteratively expand them such that, for example, a 5-fold expanded specimen can be expanded again 3- to 4-fold, resulting in as much as a 17- to 19-fold or more linear expansion.

Abstract: Incoherent millimetre wave, sub-millimetre wave and terahertz test signals are used to probe metal substrates covered by a protective coating or outer layer, such as paint or thermal insulation, obscuring direct assessment of the substrate. The incoherent test signals, provide signal dispersion and angular variation of the test signals with respect to angular incidence to the substrate. Illumination of the substrate permits differentiation between un-corroded and corroded sections of the sample because reflectivity (and emissivity) from a metal-based substrate is heavily dependent on the surface resistivity which is dependent on the corroded state. A detector/camera is arranged to pick up reflections from the substrate and an associated control system identifies regions of the sample that reflect the test signal illumination differently or otherwise indicate a variation from a reference value.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for determining weight percent of solids in a suspension using Raman spectroscopy. The methods can be utilized to acquire Raman spectral data from the suspension and to determine weight percent of solids in a process being carried out, for example, in a vessel, without the need to remove samples for analysis. The weight percent of the solids can be determined with a desired accuracy in a relatively short time, typically 10 minutes or less. The acquired Raman spectral data may be processed by chemometric software using, for example, a partial least squares algorithm and data pretreatment to provide a predicted value of weight percent solids. In some embodiments, the invention is used to determine the weight percent of microparticles of a diketopiperazine in an aqueous solution.

Abstract: A presentation module is provided for presenting a fluid sample to a Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis. The presentation module comprises an inlet for admitting a fluid sample flow from a process flow, a measurement opening for co-operating with measurement optics, and a stabilizer surface facing towards the measurement opening. The stabilizer surface is adapted to form a stabilized sample flow along the stabilizer surface such that the depth and the outer surface of the sample flow are stabilized, and the surface fluctuation and depth variation of the stabilized sample slurry flow are reduced. As laser pulses are focused on the outer surface of the planar sample flow to transform at least a part of the sample into a state of a plasma, the accuracy and repeatability of the LIBS measurement are significantly improved due to the stabilized sample flow.

Abstract: The present invention provide a method for detecting a test substance utilizing a color development caused by an enzyme reaction, or a color development caused by a specific interaction such as an antigen-antibody reaction and an enzyme reaction, the test substance being detected rapidly, sensitively and quantitatively without using a spectroscopic measurement device. The method for measuring a concentration of a test substance by the present invention comprises the steps of: generating a peroxide from the test substance; obtaining a polymerized substance by bringing an oxidoreductase for producing a polymerized substance and a substrate of the oxidoreductase for producing a polymerized substance into contact with the peroxide; and irradiating the polymerized substance with light to record a temporal variation information of an intensity of scattered light generated from an irradiation point.

Abstract: The present invention concerns a method of optical measurement of an aqueous stream, and of processing the results of the measurement in order to determine the anionic charge of the stream, the method being carried out by measuring the light absorption of the stream and predicting the amount of anionic groups in the stream using a mathematical processing, such as mathematical calculations. Particularly, the method includes the steps of adding an amount of a cationic dye to the aqueous stream, measuring the light absorption spectra of the obtained dye-containing stream, and processing the obtained light absorption spectrum using said mathematical processing in order to obtain the anionic charge. The invention also concerns the use of the obtained spectrum in determining the turbidity of the stream, as well as a device suitable for use in carrying out the method.

Abstract: An inspection method for inspecting a substrate by using an optical image obtained by irradiating the substrate with light from a light source through an optical unit, and causing the light reflected by the substrate to be incident to a sensor, includes adjusting a focus offset value such that a focal distance for setting the signal-to-noise ratio of a programmed defect to the maximum level, is obtained by acquiring the optical image while changing a focal distance between the surface in which a first pattern is provided and the optical unit. The substrate includes the first pattern, a second pattern on the same plane as the first pattern, the programmed defect in the second pattern, and a third pattern on the same plane as the first pattern. The existence of a defect is detected by acquiring the optical image of the first pattern after the focus offset is adjusted.

Abstract: An XY shift mechanism can shift a rotary table in a two-dimensional direction (XY direction) orthogonal to a rotation axis of the rotary table. By collaborative control of the shift position of the rotary table in the two-dimensional direction in synchronization with the rotation of the rotary table, rotation is made possible about a virtual rotation center that is set at an arbitrary position on the rotary table. The collaborative control of the shift position of the rotary table in the two-dimensional direction also corrects rotation eccentricity owing to the eccentricity of the rotary table. Thus, the virtual rotation center can be set at an arbitrary position on the rotary table, thus enabling obtainment of high resolution tomographic images of a plurality of regions of interest of an object, without the need for repositioning of the object.
