Abstract: A device and method manufacture an object for a user by fused deposition. A screw conveyor conveys a plurality of solid thermoplastic pellets from a hopper to a barrel. A heating element, coupled to the barrel, melts the solid thermoplastic pellets within the barrel, thereby producing a thermoplastic liquid. The thermoplastic liquid is extruded through a nozzle that caps one end of the barrel, the extruded thermoplastic liquid thereafter solidifying into the object. A computerized control system controls both a flow rate of the thermoplastic liquid, by adjusting rotation of a motor coupled to the screw conveyor, and a position of the nozzle above the build surface according to a three-dimensional shape of the object. The device and method are particularly suited for mass production of customized shoes and other objects, whereby thermoplastic material can be easily combined with customized colorants and blowing agents.

Abstract: Technologies are generally described for controlling fabrication of a 3D printed article by monitoring a temperature of an active growth region during a 3D printing of polymer material. A polymer material may be doped with one or more fluorescent molecules, which may be excited during a 3D printing of the polymer material. An intensity of light emitted from the fluorescent molecules may be determined to create a fluorescence intensity map, which may be converted into a temperature map in order to monitor a temperature of the active growth region, and generate one or more instructions based on the monitored temperature. One or more characteristics of the active growth region may then be modulated based on the instructions provided. Abstract: A material composite for the production of a stiffening member for lightweight construction by means of thermoforming includes a cellulose-based core made of a wavy paper web or having a honeycomb structure and a kraftliner, which is mechanically connected to the wavy paper web or the honeycomb structure and which in turn comprises a planar paper web. An adhesive layer is disposed between the planar paper web of the kraftliner and the core, which mechanically connects the planar paper web to the core. Furthermore, a stiffening member for lightweight construction is produced on the basis of the material composite and a production method suitable for this purpose.
