Abstract: A system and method for discriminately measuring the response of a plurality of spatially separated fiber sensors positioned along an optical fiber using a sweep of electromagnetic radiation. Each fiber sensor affects the transmission of a particular wavelength of electromagnetic radiation and the particular wavelength affected by a given fiber sensor is dependent on at least one environmental property of the given fiber sensor. By detecting the particular wavelength affected by a given sensor, it is possible to determine the environmental property of the given sensor.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatically measuring and storing a various measured values of an item, or a sequence of measured values of one or more item(s) suitable for single-handed use by a user. In particular, the present invention relates to a mobile computing device with one or more sensors for determining when to measure and record a particular value of one or more items. The mobile computing device may automatically measure the values based on sensing a change in the temperature value or through using proximity as detected by one or more onboard sensors. Additionally, the mobile computing device may automatically measure the values based on coming within range of an external proximity device. In response to automatically measuring the values, the measured values are stored along with additional information for record keeping purposes.

Abstract: A flow feature detection method is described. The method includes storing a plurality of points at locations over a region in which vortex detection is to be performed. A value for each of a plurality of fluid flow parameters, such as velocity, pressure and density, is determined at each point. The points are grouped as being contained in either a flow feature portion or normal flow portion of the region according to one or more statistical distribution for the fluid flow parameters. A point is identified as being indicative of the flow feature by identifying multiple further points at least partially surrounding the point, and determining a plane in which the flow feature is identifiable based upon the relative values of the one or more fluid flow parameter for the further points. The method may be used to detect vortices and to identify a two-dimensional plane representative of a vortex.

Abstract: There are described a method and an apparatus for measuring gas flow rate and/or volume (such as gas accumulation and consumption) based on the “rate of rise” method, particularly useful in the field of small gas flow rates, that uses a duct immersed in a liquid so as to generate a hydrostatic pressure that allows increase in pressure in a sealed chamber, so as to avoid the use of solenoid valves, producing a particular advantage when a multiple measurement system is required, when a plurality of gas flows are to be measured. The method can be applied advantageously to measure flow rates of gas produced by chemical and/or biological reactions, in particular the Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) or the Biochemical Hydrogen Potential (BHP). Abstract: A torque detecting system is adapted to detect a setting torque of a torque providing apparatus. A torque driving apparatus is mounted on a stationary base to exert a resisting force on the torque providing apparatus. The setting torque of the torque providing apparatus corresponds to the resisting force. The torque detecting system comprises an angle detecting module and an operation device. The angle detecting module is mounted on the torque driving apparatus and outputs a detecting voltage. The operation device obtains a torque value via table-searching based on the detecting voltage. The torque value corresponds to the setting torque of the torque providing apparatus. The torque detecting system performs the torque detection through a non-contact detecting technique, such that detecting accuracy would not be affected after long term use.

Abstract: A pressure sensor device with a MEMS piezoresistive pressure sensing element attached to an in-circuit ceramic board comprises a monolithic ceramic circuit board formed by firing multiple layers of ceramic together. The bottom side of the circuit board has a cavity, which extends through layers of material from the ceramic circuit board is formed. A ceramic diaphragm, which is one of the layers, has a peripheral edge. The diaphragm's thickness enables the diaphragm bounded by the edge to deflect responsive to applied pressure. A MEMS piezoresistive pressure sensing element attached to the top side of the ceramic circuit board generates an output signal responsive to deflection of the ceramic diaphragm. A conduit carrying a pressurized fluid (liquid or gas) can be attached directly to the ceramic circuit board using a seal on the bottom of the ceramic circuit board, which surrounds the opening of the cavity through the bottom.
