Abstract: Provided is a gasifier cooling structure allowing the complexity of the furnace wall structure to be reduced to a minimum, allowing the configurability of headers and connecting pipes to be improved while maintaining as much as possible the ability to cool raw syngas. In the gasifier cooling structure, the raw syngas from a gasified carbonaceous solid fuel flows through the interior of a furnace wall formed inside a pressure vessel having a circular cross section, and the raw syngas is cooled by heat exchange with a fluid flowing inside a heat exchanger tube from a heat exchanger, whereof a plurality is provided within the furnace wall. The furnace wall has a polygonal structure wherein mutually orthogonal faces are linked by an oblique face in between, and whereof the cross sectional shape is such that the edge of the oblique face is shorter than the edges of the mutually orthogonal faces.

  • Publication number: 20170009162
Abstract: A rotating heat regenerator is used to recover heat from the syngas at it exits the reactor vessel of a waste or biomass gasifier. In some embodiments, three or more streams are passed through the heat exchanger. One stream is the dirty syngas, which heats the rotating material. A second stream is a cold stream that is heated as it passes through the material. A third stream is a cleaning stream, which serves to remove particulates that are collected on the rotating material as the dirty syngas passes through it. This apparatus can also be used as an auto-heat exchanger, or it can exchange heat between separate flows in the gasifier process.

Abstract: The present invention relates to mutants of lactic acid bacteria which are resistant towards the antibiotic D-cycloserine and/or functionally equivalent antibiotics and which were found to give an increased texture when grown in milk while maintaining the other growth properties of the parent strain. The present invention, furthermore, relates to compositions comprising such mutants, and to dairy products fermented with the lactic acid bacteria resistant towards D-cycloserine and/or functionally equivalent antibiotics.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for monitoring embryos in an incubator are described. The apparatus comprises an incubation chamber defined by an incubation chamber housing and a sample platform comprising a plurality of receptacles for holding embryos within the incubation chamber for incubation. The sample platform may comprise a slide carrier on which embryo slides containing the receptacles may be placed incubation. The sample platform is rotatable about a rotation axis relative to the incubation chamber housing so as to allow receptacles to be selectively rotated to a monitoring position that is aligned with a viewing port provided in the incubation chamber housing, for example an opening or window. An imaging device is located outside the incubation chamber and arranged to image embryos within the incubation chamber at the monitoring position through the viewing port.

Abstract: Disclosed are: a gene transduction method for use in the induction of the differentiation of stem cells such as ES cells or iPS cells into hepatocytes effectively; stem cells into each of which a gene useful for the induction of the differentiation into hepatocytes is introduced; and hepatocytes produced from stem cells each having the gene introduced therein. A specific gene can be introduced into stem cells such as ES cells or iPS cells using an adenovirus vector. The effective induction of the differentiation into hepatocytes can be achieved by introducing the gene. Specifically, the effective induction of the differentiation of stem cells such as ES cells or iPS cells into hepatocytes can be achieved by introducing at least one gene selected from HEX gene, HNF4A gene, HNF6 gene and SOX17 gene into the stem cells.

Abstract: Low oxygen tension is a critical regulator of the developing or regenerating vasculature. The present invention is based on the determination that low oxygen tension during early stages of early vascular cell (EVC) derivation induces endothelial commitment and maturation of pluripotent stem cells. Inhibition of reactive oxygen species generation during the early stages of differentiation abrogates the endothelial inductive effects of the low oxygen environments. Methods of generating various types of cells from pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) are described, as well as compositions and methods of use thereof. In particular, generation of EVCs, bicellular vascular populations, early endothelial cells (ECs) and pericytes via culture in a low oxygen environment is described.

Abstract: An in vitro chamber for mimicking the mechanical and electrical forces found in vivo under physiological or pathological state. A chamber provides conditioning stimuli. The conditioning stimuli replicate a pathology, including the ability to replicate a diseased pathology. The chamber is configured to allow the additional stimuli to test physical, chemical or electrical stimuli impact on cells experiencing the particular pathology. Pharmaceuticals may be tested ex-vivo on cells exhibiting a pathology in an environment mimicking the in-vitro environment. Physical components such as pacemakers may also be tested on such cells in the chamber.
