Publication number: 20170015551Abstract: In the thermochemical water splitting process by the Cu—Cl cycle, oxygen gas is produced by a thermolysis process in a three-phase reactor. A precise knowledge of the hydrodynamic and heat transfer analyses is required for the scale-up of the thermolysis reactor. However, in the experimental studies of the scale up analysis, there are some challenges in using the actual materials of the thermolysis reactor products (i.e. molten salt CuCl and oxygen gas). In accordance with the teachings herein, alternative materials are defined, by using dimensional analyses, to simulate the hydrodynamic and heat transfer behaviors of the actual materials. It has been found that these alternative materials are liquid water at 22±2° C. and helium gas at 90±2° C. The alternative materials provide safe environment for the experimental runs as well as lower operating temperature. Furthermore, these alternative materials are more readily available and are low cost.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 14, 2016Publication date: January 19, 2017Inventor: Mohammed Wassef Abdulrahman

Publication number: 20170015552Abstract: In the thermochemical water splitting process by Cu—Cl cycle, oxygen gas is produced by a thermolysis process in a three-phase reactor. IN accordance with the teachings herein, a technique is provided to achieve the high challenging thermal requirements of the thermolysis reactor, whereby an optimized heat transfer configuration is used. The technique involves using some of the pre-heated stoichiometric oxygen gas produced from the thermolysis reaction, to transfer heat directly to the slurry of molten CuCl and solid Cu2OCl2 inside the thermolysis reactor. Experiments were performed to examine the volumetric heat transfer coefficient for the direct contact heat transfer between the gas and the slurry. It was found that the thermal scale up analysis of the thermolysis reactor with direct contact heat transfer, is based on the amount of heat carried by the oxygen gas rather than the amount of heat transferred by direct contact heat transfer.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 14, 2016Publication date: January 19, 2017Inventor: Mohammed Wassef Abdulrahman

Publication number: 20170015554Abstract: A chemical-looping system utilizes oxygen-carrier particles to produce syngas from carbonaceous fuels. The system provides a circuitous flow path for the oxygen-carrier particles, which are used to partially oxidize the fuel to produce syngas. The circuitous flow path can proceed through a plurality of unit operations, including a reducer, a conversion reactor, an oxidizer, and a combustor. The conversion reactor is designed to partially oxidize carbonaceous fuel in co-current flow with the oxygen-carrier particles to produce syngas. In embodiments including an oxidizer, the oxidizer is designed to at partially re-oxidize the carrier particles, yielding hydrogen that can be mixed with partially oxidized products from the conversion reactor to adjust syngas quality. The combustor can be used to fully oxidize the carrier particles traveling in a closed loop. Reactions carried out in the combustor are highly exothermic and yield thermal energy that is absorbed by the carrier particles.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 14, 2015Publication date: January 19, 2017Inventors: Tritti Siengchum, Luis G. Publication number: 20170015563Abstract: A process for producing a hexafluorophosphate salt comprises neutralizing hexafluorophosphoric acid with an organic Lewis base, to obtain an organic hexafluorophosphate salt. The organic hexafluorophosphate salt is reacted with an alkali hydroxide selected from an alkali metal hydroxide (other than LiOH) and an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, in a non-aqueous suspension medium, to obtain an alkali hexafluorophosphate salt as a precipitate. A liquid phase comprising the non-aqueous suspension medium, any unreacted organic Lewis base and any water that has formed during the reaction to form the precipitate, is removed.
