  • Patent number: 9605977
Abstract: A first opposing surface of a first yoke has a constant radius of curvature and has a center of curvature that lies on a center of rotation. At least two rotation direction end portions of a second opposing surface of the second yoke are formed such that toward either end in the rotation direction, the two end portions are increasingly spaced away from a reference curved surface in a direction away from the first opposing surface. The first and second opposing surfaces face each other to define a gap thereinbetween. Accordingly, the gap between the yokes is wider at its end portions than at its center, and increases in magnetic flux density flowing through a Hall element is curtailed at the end portions of the gap. Further, it is not necessary for the first yoke to protrude outward when widening the end portions of the gap.

Abstract: The embodiments relate to the use of one or more phase lock loops (PLL's) for detecting wobble of a surface upon which a computing device is set. The PLL's can be configured to lock onto an exponentially-damped sinusoid output from an accelerometer in order to differentiate between surface-induced movement and direct human-induced movement of the computing device. Reduced latency in wobble detection can be achieved by implementing the PLL in software and using multiple PLL's per accelerometer axis. Further reduction in the latency of wobble detection can be achieved by seeding the phase of an oscillator signal generated by each PLL in order to improve phase estimates when attempting to lock a PLL onto the accelerometer output.

Abstract: Presented here are devices and methods to correct ambient light measurements made in the presence of optical elements, such as the curved edge of the cover glass associated with the mobile device. In one embodiment, a film with optical properties is placed within the ambient light sensor to diffuse the high-intensity light beam coming from the optical element. In another embodiment, an aperture associated with the ambient light sensor is disposed to prevent the high-intensity light beam from entering the ambient light sensor. In another embodiment, a processor coupled to the ambient light sensor smooths the peak associated with the high intensity light beam produced by the optical element.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for measuring temperature of a measured area of a surface without contacting the surface. The thermometer apparatus has an optical system which generates a correlative image of an infrared energy detector sensitive area at an image distance from the thermometer. A limiting aperture, having a size and a shape corresponding to those of the generated image, is between a mirror and the generated image. The measured area of the surface is between the generated image and the thermometer in use. With such a configuration, little infrared energy that does not originate from the measured area strikes the detector. Consequently, the energy reaching the detector is limited such that the size of the measured area remains constant, regardless of changes in the thermometer's field of view attributable to differences in the distance between the surface and the thermometer. A scan-and-integrate mode for practicing the invention is disclosed.
