Abstract: In a process for carrying out a chemical reaction gaseous reactants are supplied to a first reaction zone including a first catalyst having a first particle equivalent diameter. The first reaction zone is operated such that when the reactants are contacted with the first catalyst a portion of the reactants is converted to the desired product. An intermediate stream of unreacted reactants and the desired product is removed and passed to a second reaction zone including a tubular reactor. Tubes of the reactor are catalyst carriers containing a second catalyst having a second particle equivalent diameter smaller than the first particle equivalent diameter. The second reaction zone is operated such that when the unreacted reactants are contacted with the second catalyst, at least some of the unreacted reactants are converted to the desired product. A product stream is then recovered. Apparatus for carrying out the process is also described.

Abstract: Cartridge-based thermocyclers can include cartridges that are configured to move a fluid between distinct chambers. In some cases, the cartridge-based thermocyclers can be used for thermocycling a sample fluid comprising a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) target to perform polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Individual chambers can be heated, cooled, and/or compressed to mix fluid within the chamber or to propel fluid in the chamber into another chamber. The cartridges can have a laminate construction. The cartridges can be configured to enable multiplexed thermocycling and/or detection.

Abstract: A debris collecting and retaining magnet structure for removable disposition in a motor vehicle transmission. The magnet structure is cylindrical and defines a plurality of axially and circumferentially extending and intersecting bars or ribs. The intersecting bars or ribs form a cylindrical cage. The cage is secured to a mounting structure having a radially extending arm or lug with a mounting opening in which a threaded fastener may be installed to secure the magnet assembly to a transmission housing. The mounting structure includes a gasket such as an O-ring to seal it within the transmission. The cylindrical magnet cage exhibits significantly increased surface area relative to conventional magnets thereby increasing the amount of metal particles that may be attracted to and retained by the magnet.
