Bending the heater cable transverse to the major axis gives a tighter bend radius than bending the heater cable transverse to the minor axis. To facilitate bending in multiple directions, the heating element is twisted around the longitudinal axis of the heater cable. The twisting may be done uniformly to give the bus wires a helical configuration, which reduces electromagnetic interference and facilitates heater cable diameters as small as 0.25 inches. Abstract: A ballast circuit suitable for driving an LED or similar load, comprises a primary switch mode converter, means for measuring a modulation, such as a phase cut, as used for dimming light levels, on an input AC supply, a current regulator positioned in series with the load, and a feedback controller for controlling operation of the switch mode controller based upon measured modulation levels. The feedback controller is adapted to interrupt normal switching of the switch mode converter if modulation levels detected lead to the ballast working at a lower than desired efficiency (deep dimming), or if voltage levels across the current regulator are higher than desired. The feedback controller may have a further feedback means for controlling switch mode parameters during lower levels of modulation (shallow dimming). The circuit allows large dimming levels to be achieved without generating appreciable light flicker in the load.

Abstract: A load control device for controlling the amount of power delivered to an electrical load (e.g., an LED light source) includes first and second semiconductor switches, a transformer, a capacitor, a controller, and a current sense circuit operable to receive a sense voltage representative of a primary current conducting through to a primary winding of the transformer. The primary winding is coupled in series with a semiconductor switch, while a secondary winding is adapted to be operatively coupled to the load. The capacitor is electrically coupled between the junction of the first and second semiconductor switches and the primary winding. The current sense circuit receives a sense voltage and averages the sense voltage when the first semiconductor switch is conductive, so as to generate a load current control signal that is representative of a real component of a load current conducted through the load.

Abstract: A detection resistor is arranged on a path of an LED string. A controller generates a gate pulse signal having a duty ratio adjusted such that the voltage drop at the detection resistor matches a predetermined reference voltage. Furthermore, the controller receives a dimming control signal which indicates the duty ratio of the burst dimming operation, and generates a corresponding burst dimming pulse. According to the gate pulse signal, the first driver drives an output circuit configured to generate a driving voltage. A second driver switches a path of a driving current between connection and disconnection according to the burst dimming pulse. A duty ratio detection unit controls the frequency of the gate pulse signal according to the duty ratio indicated by the dimming control signal.

According to certain aspects, when an area covered by the luminaires is vacant, the light level in the area is measured while the luminaires are on and set to a low dim level. The measured light level is used to approximate the amount of natural light in the area and when the measured light level exceeds a predetermined nonzero light level, the luminaires are turned off for a certain time period. Once the time period expires, the light level is measured again to approximate the amount of natural light present in the area.
