Abstract: Durable and optically transparent superhydrophobic surfaces have a coating of ceramic nanoparticles attached to a transparent substrate that are bound to the substrate through a flexible linker and a fluorocarbon moiety is bound to the surface of the ceramic nanoparticles. The nanoparticles provide the topography required for superhydrophobic surfaces and the fluorocarbon attached to the surface renders the particles hydrophobic. The nanoparticles can be metal oxide nanoparticles of dimensions that do not scatter light and the flexible linker can be constructed by an agent that has a group for bonding to the substrate and a reactive group to form a bond with a complementary second reactive group attached to a second agent that has a group for bonding to the nanoparticles.

The coating layer may be designed to resist residue on a substrate that covers a display of an electronic device. An adhesion layer including silica (SiO2) and a catalyst or dopant, such as zirconium, may be used to bond the coating layer with the substrate. The dopant can alter the chemical nature of the adhesion layer and increase the number of chemical bonding sites at a bonding surface of the adhesion layer, thereby creating an activated bonding surface. One activated surface of the adhesion layer can be bonded with the substrate, while another activated surface of the adhesion layer can be bonded with the coating layer.

Abstract: A method and a system for recycling spent ethylene or propylene glycol recovered from aircraft deicing solutions is described. The recovered spent ethylene or propylene glycol contains water and other undesirable substances which require to be removed to produce a solution free of these substances which can be further processed to remove substantially all of the water content and to blend-in additives required to certify the final glycol solution for aircraft deicing. The method and system employs a computer controller for continuous automatic batch processing of the spent glycol, including, in combination, filtering, distillation, blending and testing in specific sequences and achieves an improved quality recycled glycol of a purity of at least 99.5% and preferably between 99.6% to 99.9% glycol concentration.
