Abstract: The embodiments herein use polarization diversity between antennas where the antennas for one cell are, e.g., horizontally polarized and antennas for the other cell are vertically polarized. In one embodiment, the antennas for a macro cell are vertically polarized while micro cell antennas are horizontally polarized. In one example, the micro cell antennas are printed antennas that form a loop that is co-planar with the magnetic fields generated by the macro cell antennas when transmitting. Because the magnetic fields are co-planar (rather than orthogonal) to the current flowing through the loop in the micro cell antenna, the effect of the electromagnetic signals emitted by the macro cell antenna is reduced. This may permit dual radio network devices to have improved performance when operating simultaneously—e.g., when the macro cell radio is transmitting and the micro cell radio is receiving at or near the same frequency band.

The transmitter arrays in each pair of adjacent photonics chips are spaced apart by a first distance and the receiver arrays in each pair of adjacent photonics chips are spaced apart by a second distance. The first and second distances are co-prime numbers. Optionally, at least a second subset of the M×N photonic chips is formed by rotating a first subset of the M×N photonic chips.

Abstract: Broadband slot-coupled stacked patch antenna elements are capable of continuous broadband operation between 1.71 GHz and 2.69 GHz. The broadband slot-coupled stacked patch antenna element includes a mid-band radiating patch, a high-band radiating patch, and a low-band resonator with coupling slots capable of resonating at low, mid, and high band frequencies. Additionally, a low-profile probe-fed patch element is provided for pattern enhancement of antenna arrays at high-band frequencies. This low-profile patch element features fan-shaped probes that have three degrees of tune-ability, namely a length, a width, and a spreading angle. Further aspects include 3-column and 4-column offset arrays of the broadband patch radiators and an interleaved array of the low-profile high-band patch radiators and the broadband radiating elements. A new type of azimuth beam forming network (ABFN) is also introduced for the beam forming of the 3-column and 4-column dual-beam arrays.

Abstract: A method for fabricating nanoscale patterned oxide substrates and devices incorporating the substrates are provided. Highly periodic or non-periodic sinusoidal patterns and other fine oxide patterns are formed on the surface of a suitable base such as silicon. Fine oxide surface patterns are created with photolithography, etching and three different oxide formation events. Thin layers of conductor materials including graphene and metals can be applied to the oxide surface patterns of the substrate and conform to the pattern allowing morphology and physical properties the conductor layer to be tuned. Control over device characteristics is demonstrated by varying the dimensions, strain, orientation, wavelength and amplitude of graphene sheet corrugations. A patch antenna device with a periodic sinusoidal graphene sheet on a silicon oxide substrate mounted to a ground plane was demonstrated.

In an exemplary embodiment, an antenna generally includes a radiator and a ground plane. The ground plane may include a slanted surface along or defining an edge portion of the ground plane. The slanted surface may be configured to be operable for reducing null at azimuth plane to thereby allow the antenna to have more omnidirectional radiation patterns for the azimuth plane. In another exemplary embodiment, an antenna generally includes a substrate, a radiator along the substrate, and electrically-conductive tape or foil defining at least part of a ground plane. The electrically-conductive tape or foil is coupled to a ground of the radiator via proximity coupling and electrically insulated by masking of the substrate.

The lens antenna includes a spherical dielectric lens fed with a plurality of radiating antenna elements. The elements are arranged around the exterior surface of the lens at a fixed offset with a predetermined angular displacement between each element. The number of beams and crossover levels between adjacent beams are determined by the dielectric properties and electrical size of the lens. The spherical nature of the dielectric lens provides a focal surface allowing the elements to be rotated around the lens with no degradation in performance. The antenna system supports wideband and multiband operation with multiple polarizations making it ideal for future 5G wireless networks.
