Abstract: A method for solubilizing a carbonaceous feedstock. The method includes steps of reacting a mixture of the carbonaceous feedstock with a metal oxide including a metal at a first, higher oxidation state to reduce the metal of the metal oxide to a second, lower oxidation state by releasing at least one oxygen atom from the metal oxide. The released oxygen from the metal oxide is used to oxidize the carbonaceous feedstock. At least a portion of the metal or metal oxide containing the metal at the second, lower oxidation state is then oxidized to the metal oxide containing the metal at the first, higher oxidation state for reuse in the reaction step.

  • Publication number: 20180023009
Abstract: This invention involves a method and a device for enhanced oil-water separation and desalination in a low-pressure separator. The water-containing oil is mixed with desalted water in a countercurrent way at the entrance, wherein the desalted water accounts for 0-1% of the water-containing oil by volume. The resultant oil-water mixture then enters a T-shaped liquid-gas separator (3) for degassing treatment to quickly separate gas from the mixture. In a low-pressure separator, the oil-water mixture flows, from left to right, to a flow conditioner (4) to uniformly distribute the mixture in the transverse section, and then flows to a hydrophilic droplet agglomeration module (5) and a CPI fast separation module (6) to separate water from oil, wherein part of the separated water is discharged and the oil with a trace of water (0-0.01%) passes over a partition (18) to a deep separation segment.

  • Publication number: 20180023011
Abstract: A two-step gasification process and apparatus for the conversion of solid or liquid organic waste into clean fuel, suitable for use in a gas engine or a gas burner, is described. The waste is fed initially into a primary gasifier, which is a graphite arc furnace. Within the primary gasifier, the organic components of the waste are mixed with a predetermined amount of air, oxygen or steam, and converted into volatiles and soot. The volatiles consist mainly of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and may include a variety of other hydrocarbons and some fly ash. The gas exiting the primary gasifier first passes through a hot cyclone, where some of the soot and most of the fly ash is collected and returned to the primary gasifier.

Abstract: Provided herein is a method for obtaining flowable oil comprising the steps of providing a population of oil-producing microorganisms; recovering oil from the microorganisms, wherein the oil is at a first temperature; reducing the first temperature over a first period of time to a second temperature; and applying mechanical energy to the oil during the first period of time thereby producing the flowable oil.

Abstract: The present invention relates to animal protein-free cell culture media comprising polyamines and a plant- and/or yeast-derived hydrolysate. The invention also relates to animal protein-free culturing processes, wherein cells can be cultivated, propagated and passaged without adding supplementary animal proteins in the culture medium. These processes are useful in cultivating cells, such as recombinant cells or cells infected with a virus, and for producing biological products by cell culture processes.

Abstract: Compositions, devices and methods are described for improving adhesion, attachment, and/or differentiation of cells in a microfluidic device or chip. In one embodiment, one or more ECM proteins are covalently coupled to the surface of a microchannel of a microfluidic device. The microfluidic devices can be stored or used immediately for culture and/or support of living cells such as mammalian cells, and/or for simulating a function of a tissue, e.g., a liver tissue, muscle tissue, etc. Extended adhesion and viability with sustained function over time is observed.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a differentiated cell population of endothelial cells derived from human pluripotent stem cells. The present invention also relates to a composition, a system and a kit comprising those cells and uses thereof. The present disclosure also described the combination of arterial ECs derived from human pluripotent stem cells with a microfluidic system to create a vascular kit for high-throughput drug screening and/or toxicology analysis. This technology may find particular use for the identification of drugs that may have a fetal cytotoxic effect.
