Publication number: 20180361382Abstract: Provided herein are devices and methods of processing a sample that include, in several embodiments, rotating one or more microfluidic chips that are mounted on a support plate using a motor driven rotational chuck. By spinning one or more of the microfluidic chips about a common center of rotation in a controlled manner, high flow rates (and high shear forces) are imparted to the sample in a controlled manner. Each microfluidic chip can be rotated 180° on the support plate so that the sample can be run back-and-forth through the microfluidic devices. Because the support plate can be driven at relatively high RPMs, high flow rates are generated within the microfluidic chips. This increases the shear forces on the sample and also decreases the processing time involved as the sample can quickly pass through the shear-inducing features of the microfluidic chip(s).Type: ApplicationFiled: August 10, 2018Publication date: December 20, 2018Applicant: THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIAInventors: Ahmed Zobi, Justin Stovner, Hugo Salas, David Duarte, Jered Haun, Alan Widgerow, Derek Banyard

Publication number: 20180361391Abstract: An under-sink disposal unit includes a motor, a disposal chamber, and a passageway that extends from an opening in a top of the disposal unit to a grinding area of the disposal chamber. The disposal unit further includes a coil assembly comprising an arrangement of coils. The arrangement of coils is used to detect the passing of a metallic object in the passageway toward the grinding area of the disposal unit. The arrangement of coils comprises four pairs of coils, wherein each pair of coils comprises a transmit coil and a receive coil. The four pair of coils are arranged around an axis of the passageway and are offset relative thereto. Transmit coils located along a common axis are wound in the same direction such that the magnetic fields generated thereby augment the filed for detecting metallic objects passing toward the grinding area.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 20, 2018Publication date: December 20, 2018Inventors: Michael STARKEY, Lloyd S. Publication number: 20180361392Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus that is an attrition mill for grinding or comminuting ores, mine wastes, and radioactive wastes some of which may comprise metals, which may include uranium and/or cesium and/or mercury and/or thorium and/or rare earth elements. Also disclosed are processes that employ the apparatus for combined grinding and optionally leaching metals from ores and wastes. Some such methods comprise an optional step of grinding and mixing the ore or waste with a solid inorganic base with water addition or with an aqueous inorganic base, follow by a step of grinding and mixing the ore or waste with an aqueous inorganic acid with or without leaching salt addition, to solubilize the metals present in the ore or the waste. The disclosed apparatus and methods, in some embodiments, enable efficient grinding and attrition of ores substrates and mine wastes even without need for grinding media.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 15, 2018Publication date: December 20, 2018Inventors: Magella BILODEAU, Nicolas REYNIER, André DEMERS
