Publication number: 20190055129Abstract: An embodiment according to the invention provides methods for making interlayer covalent bonds in bilayer, trilayer, and multilayer graphene. Raman spectroscopy is used to characterize the resulting material, and the Raman peak at approximately 1330 cm?1 coincides with the characteristic peak of diamond and polycrystalline nanodiamond peaks published in the art. This indicates that the process induces the formation of sp3 carbon-carbon (C—C) bonds (similar to the ones in diamond) between the graphene layers. The graphene bilayer or multilayer converts to sp3 bonded carbon only partially, as the Raman spectrum also indicates a strong component of graphene still remaining in the bilayer or multilayer.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 20, 2018Publication date: February 21, 2019Inventors: Christos Dimitrakopoulos, Dimitrios Maroudas, Yuxi Wang

Publication number: 20190055153Abstract: A fluid bearing for directing optical fibers during manufacturing is presented. The fluid bearing provides a flow of fluid to levitate and direct an optical fiber along a process pathway. The optical fiber is situated in a fiber slot and subjected to an upward force from fluid flowing from an inner radial position of the fiber slot past the optical fiber to an outer radial position of the fiber slot. The levitating force of fluid acting on the optical fiber is described by a convex force curve, according to which the upward levitating force on the optical fiber increases as the optical fiber moves deeper in the slot. Better stability in the positioning of the optical fiber in the fiber slot is achieved and contact of the optical fiber with solid surfaces of the fluid bearing is avoided. Publication number: 20190055156Abstract: Glass fibers suitable for textile and reinforcements are described. The glass fibers have compositions that include SiO2, CaO, Al2O3, and MgO. A significant amount of the MgO is derived from the mineral brucite. In some instances, the compositions are essentially free of fluorine, sulfate, and titania. These glass fiber compositions typically have broad or large values for delta T (i.e., the difference between the log 3 or forming temperature—the temperature at which the glass has a viscosity of approximately 1,000 poise—and the liquidus temperature).Type: ApplicationFiled: August 17, 2017Publication date: February 21, 2019Inventor: Joelle Boehmer

Publication number: 20190055158Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of at least one of sintering, crystallization and/or crosslinking of a coating material (2) on a substrate (1) with laser radiation. The coating material (2) is scanned with a laser beam (8) along overlapping processing traces, said scanning being performed by moving the laser beam (8) with a first speed in a first direction while the substrate is moved with a second speed slower than the first speed relative to the laser beam (8) or vice versa in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction. The intensity of the laser beam (8), the first speed and a ratio of the first speed and the second speed are selected such that the overlap of the processing traces on the coating material (2) results in local peak temperatures of the coating material (2) above a threshold temperature (17) which are repeatedly reached within a time period (18).Type: ApplicationFiled: February 23, 2017Publication date: February 21, 2019Inventors: Jochen STOLLENWERK, Dominik HAWELKA, Milica MRCARICA
