Abstract: A matrix resin composition for fiber reinforced composite materials is described. The resin is thermosetting and achieves a glass transition temperature of at least 177° C. (Tg), obtained by curing under anaerobic conditions at room temperature. The matrix resin will streamline composite fabrication processes by eliminating the need for heating during the cure process. The implications of this development are significant in terms of the ease of use and elimination of procedural steps. While the resin system was developed specifically for vacuum bagging, it is expected to be viable for other composite fabrication methods including resin transfer molding (RTM) and vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). The resin system is viable for use with carbon fiber reinforcements to fabricate laminates at least 0.20 inches thick. The resulting laminintes have low porosity and mechanical properties equivalent to those prepared with common epoxy matrix resins.

Abstract: Gray expanded polystyrene achieving target molecular weight, bead size, bead distribution, and cell structure may be reproducibly prepared by suspension polymerization by introducing to the suspension polymerization an additive that is carbon black and/or graphite only after approximately 20 to 60 wt % of the styrene monomer has been converted to polystyrene. Introducing the additive at this point slows the polymerization rate, such as for an optimized period of time to allow for the droplet size to equilibrate to the desired target range. In one nonlimiting embodiment, the styrene polymerization rate has about 35 wt % to about 60 wt % styrene monomer remaining after about 3 hours from the beginning of polymerizing.

Abstract: The invention provides an anthracene-based organic dye and a preparation method thereof. The organic dye provided by the invention has a structure of formula (I) or formula (II), wherein Ra, Rb, and R2-1 to R2-4 are as defined herein. The organic dye provided by the invention is obtained by modifying an anthracene with Ra and Rb or modifying anthracene-based groups decorated with an aryl group or a heteroaryl group with Ra and Rb, thereby the power conversion efficiency of a dye sensitized solar cell is significantly improved when the organic dye prepared according to the present invention is applied in a dye-sensitized solar cell. Furthermore, the preparation method of the organic dye according to the present invention is quite simple together with abundant raw materials and low cost, making it possible to be commercialized.
