Abstract: A time-domain terahertz (THz) measurement system includes a single reference surface. A reference beam providing the single reference surface is supported at two mounting points, at least one of which is a non-fixed mounting point to allow for thermal expansion of the reference beam. The system acquires an air scan profile of the single reference surface with no sample present at a first time, and a sample scan profile with the sample present at a second time. The system further performs a linear correction of the air scan profile using distance measurements at two reference points outside the boundaries of the sample collected at the time of acquisition of the air scan profile and the sample scan profile. The system measures one or more properties of a sample, including, for example, a thickness profile of the sample and an effective refractive index profile of the sample.

Abstract: An enclosure permits ingress of an infrared light beam and ultrasonic signal entering the enclosure from two different locations and facilitates their exit from the enclosure along a substantially similar egress path. The enclosure contains fluid which propagates the ultrasonic wave and a glass element which reflects the ultrasonic wave from its ingress direction onto an egress path. The fluid is an index matching fluid having a refractive index the same as the refractive index of the glass element, rendering the glass element transparent to the infrared light beam. Thus, the infrared light beam, having been induced into the enclosure on an entry path directed through the glass element, passes through the glass element without being reflected or refracted by it, placing the infrared light beam on a substantially similar path to that of the ultrasonic wave for egress of both waves from the enclosure at substantially the same point.

Abstract: A method for preparing a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for phycoerythrin based on a magnetic molecularly imprinted core-shell polymer is provided. With Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles as the core, blue fluorescence-emitting carbon quantum dots (B-CDs) are coupled on the surfaces of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles, and SiO2 shells carrying template molecules (phycoerythrin) are grown on the surfaces of Fe3O4/B-CDs. Then, the molecularly imprinted polymer SiO2-MIPs are obtained by eluting the template molecules, that is, Fe3O4/B-CDs/SiO2-MIPs are obtained. Fluorescence emission spectra of the dispersion of Fe3O4/B-CDs/SiO2-MIPs in the presence of different concentrations of phycoerythrin are measured. By fitting the linear relationship between the ratios Iphycoerythrin/IB-CDs of fluorescence emission peak intensities of phycoerythrin and B-CDs and the molar concentrations of phycoerythrin, the ratiometric fluorescent sensor for phycoerythrin is constructed.

Abstract: A sensor or receiver array includes first and second pyroelectrically active electrodes formed of polyvinylidene difluoride and separated by a spacer layer that acts to electrically separate the pyroelectric layers while keeping them close enough such that they see effectively the same vibration or background acoustic excitation while maintaining sufficient separation to ensure that they generate significant differences in their pyroelectric responses. The structure provides two distinct signals (at separate timestamps), the difference between which provides a more accurate signal. An ultrasound detection system includes the tri-laminar sensor, disposed within a detection zone in which a test element can be positioned. The apparatus includes a processing unit, which comprises a detector unit coupled to the first and second pyroelectric elements and configured to derive a differential signal from the first and second pyroelectric elements.
