The controller detects whether the sensed parameter is within a range indicating the presence of drowsiness and applies a wave of electrical stimuli against the human body in response to detection of a sensed parameter within the range. The electrical stimuli cause periodic tightening and relaxing of proximate muscles as the wave progresses in a direction from an inferior location on the human body toward a more superior location.

Abstract: Neural network based heart rhythm classifiers are described. The neural network is configured to receive an electrocardiogram segment and to output an indication of whether the electrocardiogram segment represents a heart rhythm that is suitable for treatment by a defibrillation shock. Preferably, the received electrocardiogram segment is not transformed or processed prior to its reception by the neural network and no features of the electrocardiogram are identified to the neural network. In some embodiments, the received electrocardiogram segment is the sole input to the neural network. In various embodiments, the neural network is configured to classify electrocardiogram segments obtained while CPR was being performed on the patient. Classifiers that output a characteristic of CPR are also described. Such outputs may include an indication of whether CPR was being performed while the ECG was being detected, compression depth, etc. The described classifiers are well suited for use in defibrillators.

Abstract: Determining the progression of reflux disease in the esophagus of a patient includes identifying the location of an endoscopic gastroesophageal junction in the esophagus, removing a length of tissue of the esophagus that includes a portion of the endoscopic gastroesophageal junction, and identifying the proximal limit of tissue containing cardiac epithelium. Determining the length of the squamo-oxyntic gap of the biopsied tissue can involve measuring the length of tissue extending between the proximal limit of tissue containing gastric oxyntic epithelium to the proximal limit of tissue containing cardiac epithelium. A linear relationship can be determined from a slope of a line extending between a first data point and a second data point that can determine a target age of the patient when the lower esophageal sphincter will have a certain length.

Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods for biomonitoring are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a device for monitoring a user's health comprises a patch including a substrate configured to couple to the user's skin, and an array of microneedles carried by the substrate. The array of microneedles can be configured to access interstitial fluid in the user's skin and generate a first electrical signal indicative of at least one analyte in the interstitial fluid. The device can include a pod configured to releasably couple to the patch, the pod having at least one sensor configured to generate a second electrical signal indicative of a physiological parameter of the user. The pod can further include a processor configured to receive and process the first and second electrical signals to generate health measurements for the user. The pod can also include a communication unit configured to transmit the health measurements to a remote device.

Abstract: Intravascular imaging catheters are provided that include a distal sheath portion having a lumen that is configured to optionally receive a guidewire or an imaging assembly. The distal sheath portion may be configured to have dimensions such that when a guidewire is inserted through the lumen and extends through a distal exit port, the distal sheath portion may be employed as a microcatheter. External tissue may be imaged at a location at or near the distal end of the catheter, enabling, for example, the controlled imaging of a total occlusion, and the positioning of the distal end (and guidewire) within a true lumen associated with a total occlusion. A structural stop may be provided at or near the distal end of the distal sheath portion to prohibit extension of the imaging assembly out of the distal exit port, while permitting the extension of the guidewire through the distal exit port.

Abstract: An auscultatory sound-or-vibration sensor electronic test signal applied to a sound generator generates an acoustic sound signal, responsive to which an auscultatory sound-or-vibration sensor in proximity to the sound generator generates a corresponding auscultatory sound signal. The auscultatory sound-or-vibration sensor electronic test signal incorporates a plurality of frequency components, each frequency component of which incorporates an integral number of wavelengths and is terminated following a duration of time corresponding to the integral number of wavelengths after that frequency component is applied to the corresponding sound generator. A determination of whether or not the auscultatory sound-or-vibration sensor is functioning properly is made responsive to an analysis of a Fourier Transform of the auscultatory sound signal.
