Abstract: Disclosed herein are medical device systems, and methods thereof, for automatically detecting access to a medullary cavity. Embodiments include intraosseous access systems with sensing obturators, configured to detect a change in modality, e.g. pressure, oxygen saturation, electrical impedance, etc. at a distal tip thereof. Signals can be transmitted to a control logic that can modify the activation of a driver in response. Signals can be transmitted by way of wired or wireless communication. In an embodiment, signals can be transmitted through conductive polymer material that forms the obturator and allows the obturator to be flexible enough to mitigate accidental needle stick injuries.

Abstract: The present invention is directed an anchor assembly for use in spinal fixation to interconnect a longitudinal spinal rod with a patient's vertebra. The anchor assembly preferably includes a bone anchor, a body with a rod-receiving channel, an insert member (preferably a bushing), and a locking cap with a saddle. The anchor assembly preferably enables in-situ assembly where the bone anchor may be secured to the patient's vertebra prior to being received within the body of the bone anchor assembly. Accordingly, the anchor assembly enables a surgeon to implant the bone anchor without the body to maximize visibility and access around the anchoring site. Once the bone anchor has been secured to the patient's vertebra, the body may be snapped onto the bone anchor and a spinal rod may be inserted into the rod-receiving channel.

Abstract: A method for determining surgical port placement for minimally invasive surgery. Based on received measurements, an instance of a parametric torso model that defines an external surface and a visceral surface each having a dome shape that takes into account an insufflation effect, is determined. Normalized surgical target locations in the parametric torso model are determined in response to an identification of a surgical procedure, and are mapped to un-normalized surgical target locations. Permissible port locations on the instance of the parametric torso model are computed, based on the characteristics of a surgical tool and based on the un-normalized surgical target locations. Other aspects are also described and claimed.

Abstract: A method for a functional and/or structural computational modeling and simulation of medical devices which are implantable or usable on patients is described. The method first comprises the steps of storing on a computer platform 1 digital modeling data D1 of medical device, adapted to model the function and/or structure and/or behavior of a medical device which is implantable or usable on a patient, referred to the whole medical device or to a part thereof; and storing in the computer platform 1 digital anatomical and/or physiological modeling data D2 of a real or virtual patient, referred to one or more anatomical parts of the patient with which the medical device is intended to interact. The method then includes providing, through the computer platform 1, a user interface 4 which can be connected to the Internet and configured to allow a user to connect and interact with the computer platform 1 of digital data and with one or more software programs included therein.

Abstract: In certain examples, an anatomical structure visualization system determines a distance between a point on an anatomical surface visible to an endoscope and a point on an embedded anatomical object that is visually occluded from the viewpoint of the endoscope by the anatomical surface. The anatomical structure visualization system may determine, based on the determined distance, a display parameter for a pixel of an image representative of a view of the anatomical surface from the viewpoint of the endoscope and assign the determined display parameter to the pixel of the image. The anatomical structure visualization system may similarly determine and assign display parameters to other pixels of the image and provide the image for display. The displayed image may provide a visualization of an anatomical structure at a surgical area, including a visualization of how deep the embedded anatomical object is positioned from the anatomical surface.

Abstract: The present technology is the field of intraoperative imaging, wherein a planning trajectory, for example a planned drilling channel, can be displayed in a 2D X-ray image. This planning trajectory can be plotted by the surgeon in a provided 3D image data set and then displayed in the 2D X-ray image by determining the position in space via a projection geometry into an arbitrary position and orientation of a C-arm X-ray apparatus during 2D imaging.

Abstract: Described herein are systems, methods, and techniques for spatially-aware displays for computer-assisted interventions. A Fixed View Frustum technique renders computer images on the display using a perspective based on a virtual camera having a field-of-view facing the display and automatically updates the virtual position of the virtual camera in response to adjusting the pose of the display. A Dynamic Mirror View Frustum technique renders computer images on the display using a perspective based on a field-of-view of a virtual camera that has a virtual position behind the display device. The virtual position of the virtual camera is dynamically updated in response to movement of a user's viewpoint located in front of the display device. Slice visualization techniques are also described herein for use with the Fixed View Frustum and Dynamic Mirror View Frustum techniques.

Abstract: A surgical guidance system, for computer assisted navigation during spinal surgery, is operative to obtain feedback data provided by distributed networked computers for each of a plurality of prior patients who have undergone spinal surgery. The feedback data characterizes spinal geometric structures of the prior patient, characterizes a surgical procedure performed on the prior patient, characterizes an implant device that was surgically implanted into the prior patient's spine, and characterizes the prior patient's surgical outcome. The surgical guidance system trains a machine learning model based on the feedback data. The surgical guidance system obtains pre-operative data from one of the distributed network computers characterizing spinal geometric structures of a candidate patient for planned surgery, generates a surgical plan for the candidate patient based on processing the pre-operative data through the machine learning model, and provides at least a portion of the surgical plan to a display device.
