Abstract: Tunable VCSELs (TVCSELs) employing expanded material systems with expanded mechanical/optical design space for semiconductor DBR mirrors on GaAs substrates. One is the InGaAs/AlGaAsP material system. It adds indium In to decrease InGaAs H-layer bandgap for higher refractive index and higher DBR layer refractive index contrast. Adding phosphorus P gives independent control of bandgap and strain of AlGaAsP low refractive index L-layers. The tensile strain of AlGaAsP L-layer compensates compressive strain of InGaAs H-layer and lowers the cumulative strain of the multilayer DBR structure. Another option is the InGaAsN(Sb)/AlGaAsP material system, where both types of layers can be lattice matched to GaAs. It uses indium In and nitrogen N, and possibly antimony Sb, to get independent control of strain and bandgap, and thus refractive index, of dilute nitride InGaAsN(Sb) H-layers, with lower bandgap and higher refractive index than starting GaAs.

Abstract: Systems and methods for dynamic management of energy usage in local grids are provided. An example method is performed by a load distribution controller coupled to a power source and an energy storage device configured to accumulate power. The method includes acquiring reference levels of using energy of the power source at time slots within a time period and cost values corresponding to the reference levels, dynamically determining, based on the reference levels and the cost values, a schedule indicating charge levels of the energy storage device at the time slots within the time period, and configuring the energy storage device to charge or discharge the power the power according to the schedule. The reference levels are obtained using the Viterbi algorithm based on costs of the energy of power source at past times slots of a past time period and rates of charging and discharging the energy storage device.

Abstract: A string inverter control method includes: in a process of performing IV curve scanning on one or more first direct current/direct current step-up circuits, controlling a change of an output voltage of one or more second direct current/direct current step-up circuits on which the IV curve scanning does not need to be performed, where a change trend of the output voltage and a change trend of an input voltage of the one or more first direct current/direct current step-up circuits on which the IV curve scanning is performed present a non-strictly monotonically increasing relationship. Therefore, for the direct current/direct current step-up circuit on which the IV curve scanning is performed, a voltage difference between two ends of the direct current/direct current step-up circuit is not always in a relatively high state, so that a ripple current on an input inductor in the direct current/direct current step-up circuit can be reduced.

Abstract: A battery charger is configured to independently charge a plurality of single cells in a battery of series connected single cells. In one example, the battery charger provides a plurality of independent charging current paths to the plurality of single cells via a plurality of removable charging connectors. Each charging connector is associated with a different charging stage and configured to connect to a single cell of a battery of single cells connected in series. A top charging stage and each of a plurality of middle charging stages are grounded by independent isolated grounds. A bottom charging stage is grounded by a main ground. The respective, independent grounds of the charging stages serve as the reference voltages for charging each of the single cells independently.

Abstract: Methods and systems for protection/disconnect of airborne high-power/energy high-voltage modular multi-string battery packs (such as battery packs for airborne electric propulsion systems). The methods and systems are based on a dissimilar/redundant distributed battery pack protection architecture and use a smart mid-point battery disconnect in conjunction with centralized battery management system. The resulting battery disconnect/protection system is configured to detect bus faults, load faults and string faults and then take appropriate action to isolate the detected fault. For example, in response to a short circuit in one battery string, the faulty battery string may be disconnected from the positive and negative busbars while the remaining battery strings continue to provide power.
